4 January 2022 Mission Ridge* - a hidden gem / ein verstecktes Juwel

Geplant waren für heute 2 Gebiete: White Pass und Mission Ridge.

Da der Highway 12 zum Gebiet White Pass gestern bereits gesperrt war spielte ich Risiko und setzte darauf,  dass er auch heute nicht geöffnet wird. Gemäss meiner Erfahrung lohnt es sich in solchen Situationen immer auf die Karte "Genügsamkeit" zu setzen - nur zu selten wurde ich von Efforts überrascht.  

Since Highway 12 to the White Pass ski area was already closed yesterday, I took the risk that it would not be opened today either.According to my experience, it is always worthwhile in such situations to bet on the card "laziness of those responsible" - only too rarely I was surprised by Efforts. 

Et voila.

Ich nahm also die Strecke direkt zur Mission Ridge in Angriff - und die war weit genug, keine Ahnung, wie ich beide Gebiete an einem Tag geschafft hätte. Die Fahrt am Morgen bei -13°C über verschneite Hügel und durch das Columbia Valley - schon wieder - war beeindruckend. Besonders die Weinreben im Columbia Valley bei klirrender Kälte hatten mich überrascht. (Jetzt nicht mehr, denn wie ich in der Zwischenzeit gelernt habe: Washington ist No 2 in der Weinproduktion in den USA.) 

So I drove directly to Mission Ridge - and it was far enough, no idea how I would have managed both areas in one day. The drive in the morning at 9°F over snowy hills and through the Columbia Valley - again - was impressive. Especially the vineries in the Columbia Valley at freezing cold temperatures surprised me. (Not anymore, because as I learned in the meantime: Washington is No. 2 in wine production in the USA). 

Bei Wenatchee (278m) führt die Strasse ziemlich zügig hinauf bis zur Talstation auf 1380m. Dort beginnt das kleine aber sehr feine Gebiet mit 4 Liften und 700m Verticals doch ein beachtlicher Fortschritt zu gestern (und im Indypass ist Mission Ridge auch noch). 

At Wenatchee (278m), the road climbs rather briskly to the lodge at 1380m, where the small but very fine area starts. The 4 lifts and 700m verticals are a considerable progress to yesterday (and furthermore, Mission Ridge is included in the Indypass!). 

Mission Ridge liegt in einem Kessel, drei Lifte erschliessen die Flanken während der Chair 1 bis zur Midway Zubringer ist und die einzige leichte Abfahrt erschliesst. Es gibt zahlreiche Abfahrten auf breiten Pisten und durch enge Waldschneisen. Und es gibt die Snow Ghosts. Und es gibt neben 3 Sesselliften, die nicht gesichert sind, einen 4er Sessellift mit Hauben! Diese sind nicht zu häufig anzutreffen in Nordamerika. Ich mache einige Abfahrten und bin begeistert - Mission Ridge ist ein toller Spielplatz, überraschend und in meiner Wahrnehmung ziemlich weit weg von allem. Ein gut verstecktes kleines Juwel!

Mission Ridge is located in a basin, three lifts access the flanks while Chair 1 to Midway is a feeder and accesses the only easy run. There are numerous runs on wide slopes and through narrow forest corridors. And there are the Snow Ghosts. And there in addition to 3 chair lifts that are not secured - a bubble chair lift! These lifts are not too common in North America. I make a couple of runs and am thrilled - Mission Ridge is a great playground, surprising and in my perception pretty far away from everything. A truly hidden gem!

3 January 2022 Mount Bachelor - Sometimes you win, sometimes it's windy

Der heutige Tag stand schon seit längerem unter keinem guten Stern. Und manchmal ist's dann halt einfach so.

Today was star-crossed for quite some time. And sometimes it's just like that.

Um das zu erläutern muss ich kurz ausholen. Die Grand Tour of the North baut auf den Skiresorts auf, die sich dem Indypass (mehr dazu unter diesem Link https://www.indyskipass.com/) angeschlossen haben, Diese Art Saisonkarte - in jedem Gebiet kann ich 2 Tageskarten beziehen -  ist einmalig in Nordamerika und wirklich nachahmenswert (falls jemand mitliest, die/der gerade auf der Suche nach einer Geschäftsidee ist).  Andere solche Passes sind Mountain Collective und Ikon, Der vierte trans- und interkontinentale Saisonpass in Nordamerika, der EPIC Pass, ist vor allem eine Saisonkarte der Skigebiete, die im Besitz von Vail Resorts sind (und das sind ganz schön viele) ohne Tagesbeschränkung. 

To explain this please let me to elaborate briefly. The Grand Tour of the North is based on the ski resorts that have joined the Indypass (more on this link https://www.indyskipass.com/), This kind of season pass - in each area I can get 2 day passes - is unique in North America and really worth replicating in Europe (in case someone is reading along who is currently looking for a business idea).  Other passes like that are Mountain Collective and Ikon, The fourth trans- and intercontinental season pass in North America, the EPIC Pass, is primarily a season pass to the ski areas owned by Vail Resorts (and there are quite a few) with no day limit. 

Mountain Collective und EPIC hatte ich 2016/17, und nun habe ich eben den Indypass, der 81 unabhängige und eher kleine Skigebiete umfasst und sich super für meine Tour im Nordwesten der USA eignet. Dachte ich. Was ich nicht bedachte war, dass die kleinen Skigebiete ausserhalb der Hauptsaison unter der Woche nicht alle geöffnet haben (was auf den Websiten nicht immer so klar ersichtlich war). Mein Besuch bei Mount Shasta und Mount Ashland war an einem Sonntag - Glück gehabt.

Mountain Collective and EPIC I had 2016/17 for my tours in the US, and now I have the Indypass, which includes 81 independent and rather small ski areas and is super suitable for my tour in the northwest of the USA. So I thought. What I did not consider was, that some of the small ski areas are not open during the week outside the peak season (which was not always so clear on the websites). My visit to Mount Shasta and Mount Ashland was on a Sunday - lucky me.

Zwei weitere dieser Gebiete wären aber für heute Montag 3. Janur geplant gewesen: Willamette Pass und Mount Hoodoo. Beide geschlossen. Gut gibts noch einige grössere Gebiete in Oregon, die ich auf dieser Reise aus Zeitgründen allerdings auslassen und ein späteres Mal mit mehr Zeit nachholen wollte. Neben den verschiedenen Gebieten um Mount Hood betraf das den Mount Bachelor - immerhin hatte ich Alternativen. Nun war aber auch schon seit einigen Tagen bekannt,. dass in der Nacht auf heute vom Pazifik her ein Sturm auf Oregon trifft, Vorboten davon habe ich gestern ja bereits gespürt. Und heute kommt es noch dicker.

However, two more of these areas would have been scheduled for today Monday Jan 3: Willamette Pass and Mount Hoodoo. Both are closed. Well there are still some larger areas in Oregon, which I wanted to leave out on this trip for lack of time, however, and catch up a later time with more time. Beside the different areas around Mount Hood this applied to Mount Bachelor - so at least I had alternatives. Now, however, it was already known for some days that in the night to today a storm will hit Oregon, forerunners of it I have already felt yesterday.  And today it comes even worse.

Mount Bachelor ist nach eigenen Aussagen und gewissen Statistiken das 6. grösste Skigebiet in Nordamerika, was das Terrain angeht. Doch von den 9 um den Vulkankegel angeordneten Hauptliften war nur einer geöffnet: Sunrise. Alle anderen waren zu. Was sehr schade war, denn die Abfahrten am Sunrise sind alle zu flach, um bei den über 20cm Neuschnee Vergnügen zu bieten. Und der Beitrag der beiden kleinen Anfänger Lifte, die unten an der Lodge auch noch geöffnet waren, bestand lediglich darin, den $-Preis pro Lift zu senken. Macht bei 119 US$ 40 $ pro Lift. Das sind mehr als in Stowe (30$) und in Mt Rose (29$) und wenn ich mich richtig erinnere Rekord! Ein Highlight also!
Ein weiteres Highlight ist, dass ich gemäss §3, Ziffer c des World Council of Skitistics das Skigebiet Mt. Bachelor gemacht habe (hier gehts zur Regel https://wcskitistics.jimdofree.com/regeln/3-gebiet/). 
Und ein drittes Highlight war die Fahrt auf dem Highway US 97, besonders die Querung des schneebedeckten Satus Pass auf dem Weg zu meiner dritten Station: Yakima / Washington.

Mount Bachelor is, according to its own statements and certain statistics, the 6th largest ski resort in North America in terms of terrain. But of the 9 main lifts arranged around the volcanic cone, only one was open: Sunrise. All the others were closed. Which was a shame, because the runs at Sunrise are all too flat to offer any fun in the 20+ inches of fresh snow. And the contribution of the two small beginner lifts, which were also open at the bottom of the lodge, was merely to lower the $-price per lift. Makes $40 per lift for a day pass price of US$119.  That's more than at Stowe ($30) and Mt Rose ($29) and if I remember correctly, a record! So that's a highlight!
Another highlight is that I did ski  the Mt Bachelor according to §3, number c of the World Council of Skitistics (go to the rule here https://wcskitistics.jimdofree.com/regeln/3-gebiet/)d.
And a third highlight was the drive on highway US 97, especially the crossing of the snow-covered Satus Pass on the way to my third stop: Yakima / Washington.

Aller Highlights zum Trotz: Wenn ich nächstes Mal wieder dran vorbeifahre möchte ich das dann schon mit eigenen Augen sehen, das 6. grösste Skigebiet Nordamerikas.

Despite all the highlights: Next time I pass here again, I would like to see it with my own eyes, the 6th largest ski area in North America.

2 January 2022 Start of the Grand Tour of the North: Mount Shasta* & Mount Ashland*

Nach wunderschönen Festtagen in Petaluma geht es los mit der Grand Tour of the North,

Das mit dem Einfahren hat noch nicht so gut geklappt - es lag schlicht zu viel Schnee in der Sierra Nevada, die Highways waren geschlossen und die Skigebiete, die geöffnet und erreichbar waren waren überfüllt. 

So ist es dieser sonnige Neujahrstag 2022, an dem ich mich auf den Weg mache. Die Route führt mich die Interstate 5 hinauf nach Nordkalifornien, wo ich in Mount Shasta übernachte.

After wonderful holidays in Petaluma we start with the Grand Tour of the North, The warm up didn't work out so well yet - there was simply too much snow in the Sierra Nevada, the highways were closed and the ski resorts that were open and accessible were crowded. 

So it is this sunny New Year's Day 2022 that I hit the road. The route takes me up Interstate 5 to Northern California, where I stay overnight in Mount Shasta.

Es ist nur eine kurze Fahrt vom Ort hinauf zum Skigebiet, auf der ich zuerst alleine unterwegs bin, bis sich plötzlich mehr und mehr Autos sammeln und am Ende ein ganzer Konvoi unterwegs ist. Die 2017 erwobene Parkplatzparanoia werde ich wohl nie mehr los. Doch hier sind obwohl Sonntag und Holidays noch Parkplätze vorhanden. Es ist zwar einiges los in der kleinen Lodge, doch die Lifte sind noch leer.
Das Gebiet ist ein Arena-Gebiet, erschlossen von drei Liften, die im Uhrzeigersinn immer anspruchsvoller werden. Der Marmot Lift führt zu flachen Pisten, der Coyote Lift zu mittleren und der Douglas Lift erschliesst steilere Abfahrten. Ein kleines komplettes Gebiet haben sie hier. Und wenn sich auch noch der 4322 Meter hohe Vulkan Mount Shasta in seiner Pracht gezeigt hätte wäre er wirklich vollkommen gewesen, dieser Einstieg in die Grand Tour.

It's only a short drive from the village up to the ski resort, where I'm traveling alone at first, until suddenly more and more cars gather and in the end a whole convoy is on the road. I will probably never get rid of the parking paranoia that I earned in 2017. But everything is fine: although it is Sunday and holidays,  there are still parking spaces available. It is quite busy in the small lodge, but the lifts are still empty.

The area is an Arena-type, accessed by three lifts that become more and more challenging in a clockwise direction. The Marmot lift takes you to flat runs, the Coyote lift to medium runs, and the Douglas lift opens up steeper runs. A small complete area here. And if also the 4322 meter high volcano Mount Shasta would have shown itself in its splendor, it would have been really perfect, this entry into the Grand Tour.

Ich fahre ein Stunde weiter nach Norden und bin zum ersten Mal in Oregon. Die Zufahrt zum Gebiet führt über eine gut 15 Kilometer lange schneebedeckte Strasse immer weiter hinauf, die Aussicht wird immer gewaltiger. Allerdings wird auch der Wind immer stärker und oben angekommen bestätigt sich meine Befürchtung, dass der Wind die Skifreuden trüben wird: Der höchste Lift Ariel hat den Betrieb eingestellt. Da dieser rund 50% aller Abfahrten im Gebiet bedient wird das an sich schon kleine Gebiet noch kleiner. Was bleibt ist die super Aussicht auf verschiedene Vulkane hier. Und die beeindruckende Fahrt durch das Rogue Valley, hinauf auf die Hochebene High Desert, die auf meiner Strecke aber noch aus endlosen Pinienwäldern besteht. die Steppe kommt dann weiter östlich, bis nach Bend. 

I drive an hour further north and am in Oregon for the first time. The access road to the area leads over a good 15 kilometer long snow-covered road further and further up, the view becomes more and more tremendous. However, the wind is also getting stronger and stronger and when I reach the top, my fear that the wind will affect the skiing is confirmed: The highest lift, Ariel, has ceased operation. Since this lift serves about 50% of all slopes in the area, the already small area becomes even smaller. What remains is the fantastic view of various volcanoes here. And the impressive ride through the Rogue Valley, up to the High Desert plateau,  to Bend.

Jahresabrechnung Saison 2020/2021 und Gesamtstatistik

Sehe gerade, dass ich schon länger keine Saisonabrechnung erstellt habe. Die letzte war von der Saison 2017/2018. Appologies.

Diese Saison war natürlich geprägt durch die Einschränkungen durch die Pandemie. Dabei fielen weniger das Maskentragen oder die geschlossenen Terrassen ins Gewicht als die Tatsache, dass Skifahren im Winter nur in der Schweiz möglich war - wobei wir uns hier noch glücklich schätzen durften, waren doch die Hotels geöffnet. Zum Glück waren wir im Sommer 2020 auf dem Stilfserjoch - so ist auch die abgelaufene Saison eine internationale!

08.04.-09.04.2021 Saisonschluss in Zermatt

Und dann endet die Saison 20/21 dort, wo sie begann: In Zermatt. Als Ersatz für die in Frankreich geplante Skisafari verbringen wir mit dem Skiclub das letzte Skiwochenende am Fuss des Monte Rosas.

Statt eine Skisafari gabs die "6 Summit Tour" zu allen höchsten Punkten: Kleines Matterhorn, Furggsattel, Hirli, Gornergrat, Rothorn und Hochtäli. 

Ich war hier des öftern kritisch gegenüber Zermatt, diesmal finde ich grossen Gefallen an den langen Abfahrten am Rothorn, Hochtäli und sogar vom Kleinen Matterhorn. Das Haar in der Suppe ist diesmal die Aussage an der Kasse, dass die Halbtageskarte am Kleinen Matterhorn nicht gilt. Wie bitte?
