17 January 2022 Tamarack* and Brundage (Idaho): Nach dem ältesten Gebiet der USA (Sun Valley) das neueste - trom old to new

Nach meiner ersten Nacht in Boise besuche ich zwei Gebiete in der Region des Cascade Lakes, gute 2 Stunden von Boise entfernt.
After my first night in Boise, I visit two areas in the Cascade Lake region, a good 2 hours from Boise.

TAMARACK RESORT

Das Tamarack Resort sieht neu aus und ist beeindruckend gross, verglichen mit dem Skigebiet. Weshalb erzählt mir Andrew auf der ersten Liftfahrt: Ab 2002 sollte Tamarack als erstes grosses neues Gebiet in den USA seit den 1980ern aufgebaut werden, doch die Rezession durchkreutze diese Pläne und der Investor verschwand genauso wie ein Skilift (ein Artikel dazu gibts hier). Zeugin dieser turbulenten Zeit ist die grosse leerstehende Hütte bei der Bergstation des Tamarack Express. Andrew zeigt mir dann bei ein paar Abfahrten, dass es ein grosses Glück ist, dass das Gebiet durch private Immobilienbesitzer gerettet und der Wildwood Express - dort befinden sich die spannendsten Abfahrten - wieder aufgebaut wurde.

The Tamarack Resort buildings look new and are impressively large compared to the ski area. Why that is so, Andrew, who I meet on the first lift ride, is telling me on the way uphill: Starting in 2002, Tamarack was supposed to be built as the first big new resort in the U.S. since the 1980s, but the recession thwarted those plans and the investor disappeared just like a ski lift (an article on that can be found here). Witness to this turbulent time is the large empty cabin at the top station of the Tamarack Express. Andrew then shows me during a few runs that it is a great luck that the area was saved by private property owners and that the Wildwood Express - where the most exciting runs are located - was rebuilt.

BRUNDAGE MOUNTAIN

Eine kurze Fahrt über McCall bringt mich nach Brundage Mountain. Das Skigebiet hat kein Resort sondern eine französisch aussehende Lodge und 3 Hauptlifte, der Lakeview Chair erschliesst die Backbowl, die mich diesmal allerdings nicht so richtig erwärmt: Der Lift ist kurz, eher flach und schliesst bereits um 3pm. Die Aussicht auf den Payette Lake konnte das nicht kompensieren. Die guten Abfahrten befinden sich am Centennial und - in kürzerer Form - am Bluebird Express. Den bin ich dann bis zum Liftschluss gefahren. Beim Express reichte es noch für drei Fahrten, beim längeren und langsamen Centennial hätte es nur noch für eine Abfahrt gereicht.

A short drive via McCall brings me to Brundage Mountain.The ski area has no resort but a French looking lodge and 3 main lifts- The Lakeview Chair opens up the Backbowl, which doesn't really warm me up this time: The lift is short, rather flat and closes for inexplicable reasons already at 3pm.  The view of Payette Lake couldn't compensate for that. The good runs are at Centennial and - in shorter form - at Bluebird Express. I rode that one until the lift closed. At the Express it was enough time for three runs, at the longer and slower Centennial it would only have been enough time for one run.

16 January 2022 Gegensätze: Sun Valley und Soldier Mountain* - Contrasts

Nach einer guten Nacht in Bellevue steht zuerst das bekannte - und je nach Definition älteste Skigebiet in den USA - Sun Valley auf dem Programm. Soweit ich verstehe steht "Sun Valley" für die Region, für ein Gebiet angrenzend an Ketchum und für das Skigebiet am Bald Mountain, das lustigerweise von Ketchum aus zugänglich ist - dem kleinen Städtchen, das sich zwischen "Sun Valley", dem Skigebiet, und "Sun Valley", dem Real Estate-Gebiet, befindet. 

After a good night's sleep in Bellevue, the first thing on the agenda is the well-known - and, according to definition, oldest ski resort in the U.S. - Sun Valley. As far as I understand, "Sun Valley" stands for the region, for an area adjacent to Ketchum and for the ski resort at Bald Mountain, which funnily enough is accessible from Ketchum - the small town located between "Sun Valley", the ski resort, and "Sun Valley", the real estate area. 

Sun Valley wurde vom Ski Magazin in den letzten beiden Jahren gleich 2x als bestes Skigebiet der USA  gewählt (Link). Dies ist deshalb überraschend, weil Sun Valley nur 13 Lifte hat und damit in den USA gemeinsam mit anderen Gebieten auf dem 29.  Rang liegt. Da ist die Spannung natürlich gross: Kann das was?

Sun Valley has been voted the best ski resort in the USA by Ski Magazine twice in the last two years (link). This is surprising because Sun Valley has only 13 lifts and is ranked 29th in the USA along with other resorts. There is of course great excitement: Is this something?

Es ist Martin Luther King Day in den USA, und aufgrund meiner Erlebnisse 2017 mit überfüllten Parkplätzen mache ich mich früh auf den Weg und erreiche vor Liftstart (!) die River Rund Day Lodge. Vorneweg: Das Gebiet bleibt bis zum Ende meines Besuchs trotz super Wetters ziemlich leer. Mich soll es nicht stören, bei den zahlreichen Gesprächen auf dem Sessellift wussten aber meine meist lokalen Gesprächspartner nicht genau, weshalb es doch relativ wenig Leute am Berg hat. 

It's Martin Luther King Day in the USA, and due to my 2017 experiences with crowded parking lots, I set off early and reach the River Rund Day Lodge before lift start (!). Beforehand: The area remains pretty empty until the end of my visit despite super weather. I should not mind, but in the numerous conversations on the chairlift, my mostly local interlocutors did not know exactly why it has yet relatively few people on the mountain. 

Der Berg selbst ist überraschend vielfältig und bietet tolle, ziemliche sportliche Abfahrten auf mehreren Seiten mit rund 1000 Höhenmetern zu den beiden Talstationen. (Vom höchsten Punkt des Gebiets ist keine Abfahrt bis zur Talstation möglich). In den oberen Sektionen gibt es einiges an "Terrain", dies in vier verschiedenen Bowls, wobei die meisten von der Seattle Ridge Lodge und vom Lift Mayday erreichbar sind. Ich bin nur 2 davon gefahren (Mayday und Sunrise Bowl/Glades) und kann das nicht abschliessend beurteilen, doch die Steilheit kann nicht ganz mit Big Sky und Jackson Hole mithalten. Mit den verschiedenen Ausrichtungen der verschiedenen Pisten, deren Anzahl, Steilheit und Länge aber hinterlässt Sun Valley einen top Eindruck bei mir.

The mountain itself is surprisingly diverse and offers great, quite sporty descents on several sides with about 1000 meters of altitude to the two valley stations. (There is no descent from the highest point of the area to the bottom station). There is quite a bit of "terrain" in the upper sections, this in four different bowls, with most accessible from Seattle Ridge Lodge and the Mayday lift. I've only skied 2 of them (Mayday and Sunrise Bowl/Glades) and can't judge that conclusively, but the steepness can't quite match Big Sky and Jackson Hole. With the different orientations of the various slopes, their number, steepness and length but leaves Sun Valley a top impression with me.

Soldier Mountain

Der Weg führt mich nach Westen und nach rund 90 Minuten in eine ganz andere Skiwelt am Soldier Mountain. Wobei; So ganz anders ist sie nicht. Die zwei Lifte führen zu insgesamt 418m Verticals und zu überraschend vielen auch steileren Abfahrten, die sich von zwei Bergrücken hinabziehen und alle am Ende bei der kleinen Lodge zusammenkommen. Hier sind es Familien, die dem Skispass frönen, und die für die Tickets für 2 Erwachsene und 2 Kinder gleich viel bezahlen wie 1 Erwachsener in Sun Valley (200$).  Dabei bin ich überzeugt, dass die Skifahrer:innen in Sun Valley nicht mehr Freude am heutigen Tag hatten als die am Soldier Mountain. Mir haben beide Gebiete gefallen.

Heute ist Samstag, Martin Luther King Day. Die Interstate 86 ist verdächtig ruhig, als ich in Pocatello los fahre. Das ändert sich, als die I-86 in die I-84 mündet, die Hauptverbindung zwischen Salt Lake City - Boise - Portland und Seattle. Ich verlasse die I-84 nach kurzer Zeit wieder und erreiche bald Pomerelle. Der kleine Parkplatz ist bereits voll, und ich werde auf den Overflow geschickt - auf dem Berg. Dieser ist leer und als ich vom Parkplatz hinunter zur Lodge fahre sehe ich, dass der Lift leer ist. So freue ich mich auf ein paar tolle Abfahrten in einem leeren Gebiet. Als ich um die Lodge gehe und mein Indypass-Ticket abholen will....

Today is Saturday, Martin Luther King Day. Interstate 86 is suspiciously quiet as I leave Pocatello. This changes when I-86 joins I-84, the main connection between Salt Lake City - Boise - Portland and Seattle. I leave I-84 again after a short time and soon reach Pomerelle. The small parking lot is already full and I am sent to the overflow - on the mountain. This is empty and as I drive from the parking lot down to the lodge I see that the lift is empty. So I look forward to some great runs in an empty area. As I walk around the lodge to pick up my Indypass ticket....

... stehe ich vor der längsten Schlange. Der ganze Parkplatz steht vor den Kassen und wartet. Die Prozesse sind langsam, weil jedesmal Telefonnummer und Email-Adresse abgefragt werden, für Marketing-Zwecke. Die ersten 30 Minuten bewegt sich nichts, dann auf einmal kommt Bewegung auf: Es werden Blanko-Tickets verteilt mit der Bitte, dass wir doch die Tickets bezahlen, wenn die Schlange kürzer ist. Ein guter Zug, ich hätte wohl noch 90 Minuten oder mehr gewartet - dabei hatte ich das Ticket ja eigentlich bereits. Das Skigebiet selbst hat zwei Sessellifte, zwei etwas sportlichere und ein halbes Dutzend leichte Abfahrten, wovon mich eine wieder zum oberen Parkplatz bringt. der nun stattlich gefüllt ist.

... I am standing in front of the longest queue. The whole parking lot stands in front of the cash registers and waits. The processes are slow, because every time phone number and email address are requested, for marketing purposes. The first 30 minutes nothing moves, then all of a sudden there is movement: Blank tickets are handed out with the request that we do pay for the tickets when the line is shorter. A good move, I would probably have waited another 90 minutes or more - although I actually already had the ticket. The ski resort itself has two chairlifts, two somewhat sportier and half a dozen easy runs, one of which brings me back to the upper parking lot. which is now filled stately.

Die Fahrt zum nächsten Gebiet führt mich zuerst über Seitenstrassen durch die flachen Felder um Burley, dann bei Rock Creek in den Canyon hinein bis zum Magic Mountain. Das kleine Gebiet – laut Eigenwerbung "South Idaho's best kept secret" – bietet einen Sessellift mit einigen Abfahrten und kleinen Rock Cliffs. Die grösste Herausforderung war das Ticket: Zuerst es zu kaufen - die Lodge befindet sich beim Parkplatz und nicht beim Lift, wie ich zu spät bemerke - und dann es zu behalten. Auf meiner ersten Abfahrt muss ich es verloren haben, doch der Liftboy bemerkt es bei meiner zweiten Fahrt mit dem Lift nicht. Alleine der Weg in den Canyon hinein und wieder hinaus war den Besuch wert. Und erst recht die Fahrt über die weite Ebene der Snake River Plains nach Shoshone, nur knapp vorbei an den Craters of the Moon, meinem Geheimtipp, falls ihr mal in der Gegend seid, hinein ins Sun Valley bis nach Bellevue. wo ich mit einem schmackhaften Mexikanischen Abendessen den Samstag beende. Morgen ist wieder ernsthaftes Skifahren angesagt, Ticket-Abenteuer kann ich da nicht gebrauchen.

The ride to the next area takes me first on side roads through the flat fields around Burley, then at Rock Creek into the canyon up to Magic Mountain. The small area - according to self-advertisement "South Idaho's best kept secret" - offers a chairlift with some runs and small rock cliffs. The biggest challenge was the ticket: First to buy it - the lodge is located at the parking lot and not at the lift, as I realize too late - and then to keep it. I must have lost it on my first descent, but the lift boy doesn't notice it on my second lift ride. Alone the way in and out of the canyon was worth the visit. And even more the ride over the wide plains of the Snake River Plains to Shoshone, just past the Craters of the Moon, my insider tip if you are ever in the area, into Sun Valley to Bellevue, where I end Saturday with a tasty Mexican dinner. Tomorrow is serious skiing again, I can't use ticket adventures there.

WHITE PINE (WYOMING)

Einen Elch habe ich nicht gesehen - es hätte ein Highlight werden können. So ist es die Fahrt durch Pinedale hinauf zum Skigebiet White Pine am Fusse der Wind River Range, das überraschenderweise unter der Woche geöffnet ist: Pinedale hat 2000 Einwohner, die nächsten Ortschaften Boulder (52 Einwohner / 22 Miles) Big Piney (552 Einw. / 48 Miles), La Barge (551 Einw. / 67 Miles), Farson (322 Einw./70 Miles) sind nicht gerade das, was ich als Einzugsgebiet bezeichne. Mir ist es noch so recht. Mit dem Indypass bekomme ich meine Tageskarte im Gebiet White Pine, die mich berechtigen, mit zwei anderen Gästen die beiden Lifte zu befahren und das ganze Gebiet zu teilen. Ein kurzes Vergnügen auf den Ski, doch das lange Vergnügen ist heute garantiert.

I didn't see an elk - it could have been a highlight. So it is the drive through Pinedale up to the ski resort White Pine at the foot of the Wind River Range, which is surprisingly open during the week: Pinedale has 2000 inhabitants, the next villages are Boulder (52 inhabitants / 22 Miles) Big Piney (552 inhabitants / 48 Miles), La Barge (551 inhabitants / 67 Miles), Farson (322 inhabitants / 70 Miles) are not exactly what I call a large catchment area (well it0's large, but no one lives here...). It's still fine with me. With the Indypass I get my day pass in the White Pine area, which entitles me to ski the two lifts with two other guests and share the whole area. A short pleasure on the skis, but the long pleasure is guaranteed today.

BEAVER MOUNTAIN (UTAH)

Ich erreiche Beaver Mountain zur Rush Hour. Freitag und der Parkplatz ist voll. Die Greater Area Logan mit über 125'000 Einwohner bietet ein anderes Einzugsgebiet als Pinedale. Das Skigebiet ist klein aber fein und erschliesst zwei Gipfel. Marges Tripple und Harry's Dream erschliessen etwas längere Abfahrten, Beavers Face und Little Beaver kürzere. Das Gebiet hat keine steilen Abfahrten, macht aber Spass.

I reach Beaver Mountain at rush hour. Friday and the parking lot is full. The Greater Area Logan with over 125'000 inhabitants offers a different catchment area than Pinedale. The ski resort is small but nice and accesses two peaks. Marges Tripple and Harry's Dream open up slightly longer runs, Beavers Face and Little Beaver shorter runs. The area has no steep runs, but is fun.

Das kleine Gebiet Cherry Peak – ebenfalls im Einzugsgebiet Logan – liegt auf dem Weg zu meinem Ziel und hat gerade noch geöffnet, als ich um 3.30pm eintreffe. Für ein paar Fahrten auf dem kurzen Sessellift reicht es, die Backbowl ist bereits geschlossen, was nicht so tragisch ist, weil der längste Lift des Gebiets wegen Schneemangel nicht geöffnet wird.

The small Cherry Peak area - also in the Logan catchment - is on the way to my destination and is just open when I arrive at 3.30pm. It is enough for a few rides on the short chairlift, the Backbowl is already closed, which is not so tragic, because the longest lift of the area is not opened due to lack of snow.

Die Fahrt (Highway 91, Interstate 15) führt durch den Sonnenuntergang und die Dämmerung und über die Grenze wieder zurück nach Idaho. Ich verlasse die Interstate im Nebel und fahre hinauf zum Pebble Creek in der Hoffnung, dass das Gebiet über dem Nebel liegt – berechtigt, ich erwische das letzte Licht und erlebe Pebble Creek in den schönsten Farben! Es ist Nachtskifahren, ein Lift läuft, und hier habe ich das Gefühl, etwas zu verpassen: Die oberen beiden Sessellifte (Skyline, Sunshine) versprechen einiges an Spass, der laufende Aspen-Lift ist dann für den Anfang. Oder den Abschluss des Tages. Ich bedanke mich für den wunderschönen Abend und fahre nach Pocatello, der nahegelegenen Stadt (50'000 Einwohner).

The ride (Highway 91, Interstate 15) takes me through sunset and dusk and across the border back into Idaho. I leave the interstate in the fog and drive up to Pebble Creek hoping that the area is above the fog - justified, I catch the last light and experience Pebble Creek in the most beautiful colors! It's night skiing, one lift is running, and here I feel like I'm missing out: The top two chairlifts (Skyline, Sunshine) promise some fun, then the running Aspen lift is for starters. Or the end of the day. I thank for the wonderful evening and drive to Pocatello, the nearby town (50'000 inhabitants).
