Das Motto des heutigen Tages: Aufräumen. In allen Skigebieten war ich bereits einmal, aber nicht ausreichend. Das soll sich heute ändern.

I have been to all of these ski areas before – but not thoroughly enough. That is what today is about.
Smuggler's Notch (Vermont, 798 Höhenmeter)
Zum ersten Mal war ich 2019 hier. (Link) Aber aufgrund zu viel Wind damals eben doch nicht. Nun laufen alle Lifte in diesem beeindruckenden Kessel, in dem die Sessellifte durch die Bäume hoch hinaufziehen. Die maximale Höhendifferenz vom Madonna Mountain bis ins Village beträgt beinahe 800 Höhenmeter.
Das Gebiet besteht aus zwei Bereichen, dem Village mit einfachen Pisten und dem "Mountain" (so hat das auf jeden Fall einer der Liftnachbarn genannt) mit den längeren und steileren Abfahrten. Star ist der Madonna Mountain, der auch einige Doublediamonds aufzuweisen hat.
Die Abfahrten sind etwas weniger steil als in Mad River Glen oder in Sugarbush, dafür sind die Lifte langsam. Ich bin fasziniert: Es gibt keinen auskuppelbaren Sessellift hier, die Lifte sind uralt (Madonna I ist von 1962, generalüberholt 2002), und das scheint niemanden hier zu stören.
I was here for the first time in 2019. But back then, strong winds meant I never really got to ski the mountain properly. This time, all lifts are running in this impressive bowl, where chairlifts climb high through the trees. The maximum vertical drop from Madonna Mountain down to the village is close to 800 meters.
The ski area consists of two main zones: the Village, with easier terrain, and what one of my lift neighbors simply called “the Mountain,” which offers longer and steeper runs. The star is Madonna Mountain, which even features several double-black diamond trails.
The slopes are a bit less steep than at Mad River Glen or Sugarbush, but the lifts are slow. I am fascinated: there is not a single detachable chairlift here. The lifts are old – Madonna I dates back to 1962 (overhauled in 2002) – and nobody seems to mind.

Auch hier war ich zum ersten Mal 2019, am selben Tag wie in Smuggler's Notch. In Stowe waren damals einige der Lifte often. Aber einige wichtige Lifte waren damals zu und mein Urteil war nicht sehr wohlwollend. Allerdings habe ich in der Zwischenzeit viel Gutes über Stowe gehört, wenn ich also schon in der Gegend bin, und weil ich noch einen Tag zu viel (danke Telluride) auf meinem EPIC Day Pass Tier 44 habe, möchte ich Stowe nochmals eine Chance geben.
Damals war das Wetter schlecht und wolkenverhangen. Nun, da ich das ganze Gebiet einsehen kann, erfasse ich die ganze Grösse: Es gibt drei Berge mit unterschiedlichen Charakteren: Mansfield Lodge mit den Sesselliften, die letztes Mal auch schon liefen (Forerunner als Highlight), die Gondelbahn und die Spruce Camp Base Lodge mit den Sunny Spruce und Sensation Quad, die nicht nur steile Abfahrten haben.
Die langen schmalen Schneisen durch die Wälder, die Sugarbush, Mad River Glen und Smuggler's Notch auszeichnen, gibt es hier eher nicht, es gibt hier mehr weiss zwischen dem grün. Und es gibt eine Bergkulisse mit Felsen, die alles sehr einzigartig macht. Dennoch ist Stowe eher ein Pistenparadies, es fehlen die sehr schwierigen Abfahrten - und gerade das macht das Gebiet wohl so attraktiv. Auf jeden Fall bin ich dankbar, dass ich noch einmal die Chance erhalte, Stowe bei besseren Verhältnissen kennen zu lernen. Und ja, es ist eines der besten der East Coast - nicht nur, weil es hier zahlreiche moderne und schnelle Lifte hat.
I also first visited Stowe in 2019, on the same day as Smugglers’ Notch. At that time, some lifts were running, but several key ones were closed, and my impression was not particularly favorable. Since then, however, I have heard many positive things about Stowe. As I am already in the area – and because I still have one extra day left on my Epic Day Pass Tier 44 (thanks, Telluride) – I decide to give Stowe another chance.
Back then, the weather was poor and the mountain hidden in clouds. Today, with clear views across the entire area, its full scale becomes apparent. Stowe consists of three mountains with distinct characters: Mansfield, with chairlifts that were already running during my first visit (Forerunner as the highlight); the gondola; and Spruce Camp, with the Sunny Spruce and Sensation Quad, which serve not only steep terrain.
The long, narrow forest corridors that characterize Sugarbush, Mad River Glen, and Smugglers’ Notch are less prominent here. There is more open, white space between the trees, and a dramatic rocky mountain backdrop that makes the setting unique. Still, Stowe is more of a piste paradise: truly extreme terrain is limited – and that is probably exactly what makes the resort so attractive.
In any case, I am grateful to experience Stowe again under much better conditions. And yes, it deserves its reputation as one of the best resorts on the East Coast – not least because of its many modern and fast lifts.
Lifte Neu (3): Gondola, Sunny Spruce, Sensation Quad
Bolton Valley (Vermont, 519 Höhenmeter)
Gestern war ich bereits hier, um 15.45, weil ich nicht wusste, ob ich das Gebiet schon besuchen soll (es hat hier Nachtski). Es war mir aber irgendwie alles zu kalt und zu mühsam, der Parkplatz liegt unterhalb und der Lifte, ich war müde und habe mich dagegen entschieden, was dazu führte, dass ich Cochran's Lift kennen lernen durfte. Heute bin ich etwas früher da, 15.30 um genau zu sein - keine Ausreden mehr. Das Resort erinnert mich an eine dieser heruntergekommenen französischen Station, Super Sauze oder Saint-Francois Longchamp (weiss nicht, weshalb mir gerade diese in den Sinn kommen).
Das Skigebiet bietet zahlreiche einfachere Pisten und nach den beiden ersten Top-Gebieten heute ist das zum Abschluss irgendwie .... naja, nach nicht all zu langer Dauer ist es dann geschafft und ich mache mich auf den Weg nach Bennington. 3 Stunden sind es. Noch einmal eine lange Fahrt bis zum Hotel, die letzte auf dieser Reise.
Yesterday, I had already stopped here at 3:45 pm, unsure whether to ski or not (there is night skiing here). It felt too cold and too cumbersome: the parking lot sits below the lifts, I was tired, and I decided against it – a decision that led me instead to discover Cochran’s Ski Area.
Today, I arrive a bit earlier – 3:30 pm, to be precise. No more excuses. The resort reminds me of one of those slightly run-down French ski stations – Super Sauze or Saint-François-Longchamp (not sure why those come to mind).
The ski area offers many easier runs, and after the two strong resorts earlier today, this feels like a modest finale. After not too long, I call it a day and head toward Bennington. Three hours of driving lie ahead – one more long drive to the hotel, and the last one of this trip.
