Nach der Nacht in Ohio geht es kurz durch Pennsylvania und gleich nach der Grenze im Südwesten des Bundesstaats New York befindet sich dann das erste Gebiet des Tages: Peek'N'Peak.

Peek'N'Peak (122 Höhenmeter gemäss Skigebietswebseite, 105m gemäss skiresort.de)
ist ein Resort am Fuss eines kleinen Hügels - ich habe mir länger überlegt, ob das hier derselbe Typ ist wie Afton Alps: Ein Gebiet aus einer Talsohle hinaus. Aber auch wenn die Verticals in etwa dieselben sind, ich glaube PK2 liegt tatsächlich am Fusse eine Hügels. Es gibt gleich drei Doppelsessellifte, die Pisten sind breit und super präpariert - aber eben, kurz. Kurz ist dann auch mein Aufenthalt hier. Denn auf das nächste Gebiet bin ich sehr gespannt.

Holiday Valley (230 Höhenmeter)
Seit Granite Peak hatte kein Skigebiet mehr mehr als 200 Höhenmeter (und ich glaube, es wird auch kein solches mehr auf meiner Reise kommen). Die 230 Höhenmeter sind dann auch eher symbolisch wichtig, denn Holiday Valley ist aus anderen Gründen interessant: Das Resort wurde von den Lesern des Ski Magazine als viertbestes Gebiet des Ostens ausgezeichnet (Link).
Das Skigebiet kann dann auch eine ganze Reihe mehr als alle anderen, die ich seit Milwaukee gefahren bin. Es besteht aus zwei Gipfeln und zwei Talenden, hat 10 ernstzunehmende Sessellifte und - JA - vier davon sind Expressslifte! An den Liften Yodeler, Chute, Eagle und Snowpine hat es richtige Abfahrten mit Gefälle und einiges an Länge, auch wenn man die Hänge locker ohne Pause befahren kann (der Spruce Lake war leider geschlossen und kann nicht beurteilt werden). So cruise ich hin und her durch das Gebiet, bis ich alle Lifte gefahren bin, und freue mich auf die kommenden Skigebiete. Hoffe, Holiday Valley war der Anfang vom Aufstieg.

Von nun an gehts bergab
Heute und morgen sind die letzten "warmen" Tage, bevor es so richtig richtig knackig kalt wird. Winter wollte ich und Winter bekomme ich. Minus 22° Celsius werden es am Samstag in Maine. Das erinnert mich an früher. Ob ich das heute auch noch lustig finde?

After the night in Ohio, the route briefly passes through Pennsylvania, and just after crossing the border into the southwest of New York State lies the first ski area of the day: Peek’n’Peak.
Peek’n’Peak (122 meters vertical according to the resort website, 105 metres according to skiresort.com)
Peek’n’Peak is a resort located at the foot of a small hill. I spent some time wondering whether this might be the same type of area as Afton Alps: a ski area rising out of a valley floor. But even though the vertical drops are roughly comparable, I believe Peek’n’Peak actually sits at the base of a hill. There are three double chairlifts, the slopes are wide and very well groomed – but, as expected, short. As a result, my stay here is short as well, because I am very curious about the next area.

Holiday Valley (230 meters vertical)
Since Granite Peak, no ski area has offered more than 200 meters of vertical (and I suspect none will appear later on this trip either). The 230 meters here are therefore symbolically important, but Holiday Valley is interesting for other reasons as well: the resort was ranked as the fourth-best ski area in the East by readers of Ski Magazine (Link).
Holiday Valley also offers far more than any of the areas I have skied since Milwaukee. It consists of two peaks and two base areas, features ten serious chairlifts – and yes, four of them are express lifts. The Yodeler, Chute, Eagle, and Snowpine lifts serve proper runs with sustained pitch and decent length, even if the slopes can be skied comfortably without a break. (Spruce Lake was unfortunately closed and cannot be assessed.)
I cruise back and forth across the resort until I have ridden all the lifts, and look forward to the ski areas still to come. I hope Holiday Valley marks the beginning of an upward trend.

From now on, it’s all downhill.
Today and tomorrow are the last “warm” days before it turns properly, seriously cold. I wanted winter, and winter is what I am getting. On Saturday, temperatures in Maine will drop to –22°C. That brings back memories of earlier days.
The question is whether I will still find it amusing today.
