30.01.2026 Viermal Einmalig: Dartmouth Skiway, Saskadena Six, Mad River Glen und Cochrane's

Die Feier gestern war nur kurz und fand mangels Restaurants in der näheren Umgebung des Motels im Zimmer statt. Denn heute ist ja auch noch ein Tag! Und was für einer: Ungeplant stehen heute vier total einmalige Skigebiete auf dem Plan. Natürlich ist jedes Skigebiet einmalig, aber ich versuche aufzuzeigen, was diese Skigebiete einmalig macht.

Yesterday’s celebration was short and took place in the motel room, as there were no restaurants in the immediate vicinity. After all, today is another day! And what a day it is: quite unexpectedly, four truly unique ski areas are on today’s agenda. Of course, every ski area is unique in its own way, but I try to show what makes these particular ones special.

Dartmouth Skiway (New Hampshire, 295 Höhenmeter): Skigebiet des Dartmouth College
Das Dartmouth College, eine der acht Ivy-League-Universitäten und 1769 gegründet, hat sein eigenes Skigebiet (Zur Geschichte geht's hier). Und natürlich erhalten die Studierenden auf die Saisonkarten massive Rabatte - die Erstjahrestudierenden noch mehr als die älteren Semester. (Andrew Weibrecht ist von hier.)

Als ich ankomme, steht der eine Lift, am anderen sind zahllose Rennfahrer:innen der verschiedenen Rennakademien der East Coast und fahren Rennen - schon wieder Rennen, an einem schönen Hang, zugegeben. Auf meine Frage, ob der zweite Lift (Winslow) heute noch laufen würde, lautete die Antwort: "Höchstwahrscheinlich nicht." Und nun weiss ich auch weshalb (siehe das Datum).

Dartmouth College, one of the eight Ivy League universities and founded in 1769, has its own ski area (you can find the history here). And of course, students receive substantial discounts on season passes — first-year students even more so than upperclassmen. (Andrew Weibrecht comes from here.)

When I arrive, one lift is running; at the other, countless racers from various East Coast racing academies are training and racing — once again, racing, on a beautiful slope, admittedly. When I ask whether the second lift (Winslow) will be operating today, the answer is: “Most likely not.” And now I also know why (see the date).

Lift 1: Holts

Saskadena Six (Vermont, 191 Höhenmeter): Ältestes Skigebiet in den USA - Oldest ski area in the US

Eine gute Dreiviertelstunde später erreiche ich Saskadena Six, das sich rühmt, das älteste Skigebiet in den USA zu sein. Es gibt zwar noch Mitstreiter (Steamboat und Sun Valley), aber dass das Gebiet 2026 den 90. Geburtstag feiert, ist unbestritten und beeindruckend (hier gibts interessante Informationen dazu, auch zum Namenswechsel). Vor allem, weil das Gebiet nur einen Sessellift hat (und einen Zauberteppich). Die verschiedenen Abfahrten bedienen alle Levels, doch The Face ist die wahre Piste, 191 Höhenmeter schnörkellos von der Berg- zur Talstation.

A good three quarters of an hour later, I reach Saskadena Six, which prides itself on being the oldest ski area in the United States. There are other contenders (Steamboat and Sun Valley), but the fact that the area will celebrate its 90th anniversary in 2026 is undisputed — and impressive (there is some interesting information about this here, including the name change). Especially considering that the area has only one chairlift (and a magic carpet). The various runs cater to all levels, but The Face is the true run here: 191 vertical meters, straightforward from top to bottom.

Lift 1: 2000' Quad Chair

Mad River Glen (Vermont, 621 Höhenmeter): Ski it if you can!

Was für ein Name, was für ein Mythos: In den Podcasts, die ich höre, wird Mad River Glen in einem Atemzug mit den anderen Klassikern wie Alta und A-Basin erwähnt. Mad River Glen liegt gleich neben Sugarbush, die beiden Gebiete könnten mit wenig gutem Willen miteinander verbunden werden. Aber die kulturellen Welten, die zwischen den beiden Ski Resorts liegt, lassen sich mit keinem Lift dieser Welt überwinden. Mad River Glen zelebriert das andersartige wie das überkommene Snowboarderverbot, das einzigartige wie den historischen aber renovierten Einersessellift, und das unbestrittene: Lange Abfahrten durch die Wälder Vermonts. Ich bin einmal mehr begeistert, wie viele Höhenmeter es hier durch die Bäume geht, und wie viel Spass so lange Abfahrten machen. 

What a name, what a myth. In the podcasts I listen to, Mad River Glen is mentioned in the same breath as other classics such as Alta and A-Basin. Mad River Glen lies right next to Sugarbush; with a bit of goodwill, the two areas could be connected. But the cultural worlds that lie between the two ski resorts cannot be bridged by any lift on earth. Mad River Glen celebrates the unconventional, such as the long-standing snowboard ban; the unique, such as the historic yet renovated single chairlift; and the indisputable: long runs through the forests of Vermont. Once again, I am amazed at how many vertical meters you ski through the trees here — and how much fun such long runs are.

Cochran's (Vermont, 91 Höhenmeter): No child will be denied the opportunity to ski or ride. 

Mir ist kalt, ich bin müde - doch auf dem Weg zum Motel taucht plötzlich ein beleuchteter Hang mit Skilift auf. Rasch abbiegen und nachschauen! Das kleine Gebiet heisst Cochran's und bietet Skifahren zu erschwinglichen Preisen. 

Was wie Whaleback gestern tönt ist hier aber in vielerlei Aspekten anders; Der Eintrittspreis (auch hier gibts kein Ticket) beträgt am Freitagabend 5 $ für alle. Die 4 Pisten sind perfekt präpariert. Die Beleuchtung ist professionell, die Schneekanonen sind es auch, und die Renngruppe trainiert bereits. Es hat eine offene Feuerstelle und eine kleine Lodge, in der sich mein Verdacht bestätigt: Es handelt sich hier um den Skilift der Familie Cochran, Ryan Cochran-Siegle ist der aktuelle Spitzenathlet. Ich lese auf der Webseite die Vision und bin begeistert - Cochran's ist so sehr inklusiv, wie Mad River Glen ausgrenzend ist. Und so hinterlässt das kleine Cochran's einen Kratzer im Bild des so grossen Mad River Glen.

I am cold, I am tired — but on the way back to the motel, a suddenly illuminated slope with a ski lift appears. A quick turn-off to investigate! The small area is called Cochran’s and offers skiing at affordable prices.

What might sound like Whaleback yesterday is, in many respects, quite different here. The entry fee (there are no tickets here either) is $5 for everyone on Friday evening. The four runs are perfectly groomed. The lighting is professional, the snowmaking is as well, and the race group is already training. There is an open fire pit and a small lodge, where my suspicion is confirmed: this is the ski lift of the Cochran family, and Ryan Cochran-Siegle is the current top athlete. I read the vision on the website and am impressed — Cochran’s is as inclusive as Mad River Glen is exclusionary. And so the small Cochran’s leaves a scratch on the image of the great Mad River Glen.
