Wie bereits in den letzten Posts erwähnt ist es aktuell etwas schwierig hier mit dem Schnee. Red River und Angel Fire haben nur die Anfängerbereiche geöffnet, weshalb wir Taos vorgezogen haben. Das heisst, das Feld heute ist offen für eines der wenigen Skigebiete im Westen, das wirklich Schnee hat: Wolf Creek.
Wolf Creek war nicht geplant und rückt nun statt Red River/Angel Fire nach. Es ist nur ein kleiner Umweg, der uns nun den Highway 160 über Monte Vista hinauf zum Wolf Creek Pass (3350m) führt. Noch in Alpine auf rund 2400m lässt nichts darauf deuten, dass Wolf Creek tief verschneit ist. Das Gebiet besteht aus einer Reihe aneinandergereihter Lifte, die weniger Pisten als viele verschiedene Waldabfahrten (was ist der adäquate Begriff auf deutsch dafür?) bedienen. Die Verticals sind entsprechend gering, und das Gebiet lebt von den zahlreichen Varianten, die sich vor allem südöstlich des Alberta Lifts befinden. Das führt zu einem interessanten Pistenplan, bei dem auf der linken Hälfte keine Lifte sondern nur Varianten eingezeichnet sind, wobei dieser Bereich nur durch einen kurzen Hike ab der Bergstation des Albertalifts zugänglich ist. Auf der anderen Seite des Resorts, bei den Liften Bonanza Chair und Raven Chair gibt es etwas mehr Pisten. Anspruchsvoll sind hier jedoch ausschliesslich die Varianten - ein richtig westamerikanisches Skigebiet halt.

As mentioned in the last posts, snow conditions are a bit tricky here at the moment. Red River and Angel Fire currently have only their beginner areas open, which is why we brought Taos forward. That leaves today wide open for one of the few ski resorts in the West that actually has real snow: Wolf Creek.
Wolf Creek was not part of the original plan and now steps in instead of Red River and Angel Fire. It is only a small detour, taking us along Highway 160 via Monte Vista up to Wolf Creek Pass (3,350 m). Even in Alpine, at around 2,400 m, there is little to suggest that Wolf Creek is deeply snow-covered.
The resort consists of a sequence of lifts that serve fewer groomed runs and far more tree skiing and gladed terrain. As a result, the vertical drop is relatively modest, and the area lives off the many different line choices, especially southeast of the Alberta Lift. This creates an interesting trail map: on the left half there are no lifts at all, only variants and tree runs, accessible via a short hike from the top of the Alberta Lift. On the other side of the resort, around the Bonanza Chair and Raven Chair, there are a few more marked runs. The challenging skiing, however, is found almost exclusively in the off-piste variants – a truly Western American ski area.
