Flagstaff? Da war doch was. Richtig!
Flagstaff? I had been here before. Right — back in 2015.
That time it was a Monday, and I learned the hard way that the resort was only open from Friday to Sunday (story linked in the blog).
Today, however, things are different — even though it is Tuesday. The resort is open, at least largely so. Many runs are operating, even if snow coverage is thin in places. Several tree runs remain closed, and two chairlifts are not running at all.
Still, the positives clearly outweigh the limitations.
There are new and fast lifts here. The terrain accessed by the Arizona Gondola and the Grand Canyon Express is genuinely sporty and fun to ski. The diamond runs through the trees would be even more demanding with better snow coverage.
What stands out is how clearly the resort is divided into beginner and advanced zones, keeping the two groups well separated. It is almost as impressive as what I experienced yesterday in Lee Canyon.
And then there is the view: breathtaking.
I am having great fun on the runs, although I am a bit surprised by how hard the snow is. On the practical side, the parking setup is compact and efficient — changing skis does not require much effort.
Back on the slopes with my new Head Race skis, I am probably the only skier on the mountain on this type of equipment. It takes a few runs to adjust: compared to my all-mountain skis, I need to shift my weight further forward. All the more satisfying that after just a handful of runs I manage to control the turquoise machines properly.
But the day comes to an end sooner than expected. A long transfer still lies ahead: from Flagstaff to Santa Fe it is about six hours of driving — through beautiful desert and steppe landscapes, yes, but six hours nonetheless.
