Hatten wir doch schon mal auf dieser Reise
Die Berkshires sind eine Hügelzug in den Appalachen, südlich der Green Mountains, in denen ich die letzten beiden Tage Ski gefahren bin (ab Saskadena Six). So richtig verstanden habe ich die Unterteilung der Appalachen noch nicht, aber ich habe ja noch ein paar Tage Zeit.
Heute ist Sonntag und damit Ruhetag. Deshalb gibt es ein spätes Aufstehen, zwei Gebiete und ein frühes Einchecken. Sonntag ist nicht mein präferierter Skitag, in meiner Erinnerung sind dann einfach zu viele Leute unterwegs. Auf dieser Reise traf das zu in China Peak und Eldora. Und in ....
The Berkshires are a range of hills within the Appalachian Mountains, south of the Green Mountains where I skied over the past two days (starting with Saskadena Six). I have not fully figured out the subdivision of the Appalachians yet – but I still have a few days to do so.
Today is Sunday, which makes it a quieter day. That means sleeping in, two ski areas, and an early check-in. Sunday is not my preferred ski day; in my memory, there are simply too many people out. On this trip, that was certainly the case at China Peak and Eldora. And at …
Ok, ganz so schlimm war es dann doch nicht, ich finde einen Parkplatz und die Anstehzeit ist maximal 10 Minuten. Das wird wieder gutgemacht durch die wunderschöne Anfahrt über diese Hügelzüge, die mich ein wenig an den Schweizer Jura erinnern - vielleicht gibt es hier deshalb einen weiteren Aussichtspunkt mit America's Switzerland oberhalb von North Adams (bereits der zweite auf dieser Reise - gibt's noch mehr?).
Das Skigebiet ist also super besucht. Es hat drei Sessellifte ganz hinauf auf den Berg (einer davon steht still), einen kleinen Anfängersessellift und ein paar Carpets. Die direkten Abfahrten sind durchaus steil, dann gibt es auch auf der Frontseite etwas leichtere Abfahrten, die quer durch den Berg ziehen, und dann gibt es grüne Pisten, die hinten um den Hügel herum wieder zur Base Lodge führen. Ich finde, die holen hier sehr viel aus diesem Hügel heraus.
Alright, it turns out not to be quite that bad. I find a parking spot, and the wait times are no more than ten minutes. That is more than compensated for by the beautiful drive through these rolling hills, which remind me a bit of the Swiss Jura. Perhaps that is why there is another viewpoint labeled “America’s Switzerland” above North Adams (already the second one on this trip – are there more?).
The ski area is clearly very busy. There are three chairlifts to the summit (one of them not operating), a small beginner chairlift, and a few carpet lifts. The direct fall-line runs are fairly steep, while the front side also offers easier traversing runs that cut across the mountain. In addition, there are green trails that loop around the back of the hill and return to the base lodge. I think they make very good use of this terrain.

Jiminy Peak (Massachusetts, 344 Höhenmeter)
Der Weg führt mich rund eine Stunde leicht südlich über die gleichen Hügel hinweg wie vorher in Richtung Westen bis ins Jiminy Peak Resort. Dieses bietet in Etwa dasselbe wie Berkshire East, es hat allerdings ein Resort dazu (und es ist ein Bonus Mountain auf dem IKON) und das Skigebiet weist auf den Seiten leicht eigenständige Sektoren (Widows White links, Grand Slam rechts) auf.
Es erinnert mich ein bisschen (wie viele japanische Skigebiete) an einen Sessel: Die Rückenlehne ist das Hautgebiet, die Armlehnen sind die etwas kleineren Seitengebiete. Die steilen Pisten sind etwas kürzer, die Vielfalt der Abfahrten ist aber etwas grösser.
From there, I drive about an hour slightly south, crossing the same hill ranges again, this time heading west toward Jiminy Peak Resort. In many ways, it offers something similar to Berkshire East, but with an attached resort village (and it is a bonus mountain on the Ikon Pass). The ski area also has more clearly defined side sectors: Widow’s White on the left and Grand Slam on the right.
The layout reminds me a bit of a chairlift seat – as with many Japanese ski resorts: the backrest is the main area, and the armrests are the smaller side zones. The steep runs here are somewhat shorter, but the overall variety of terrain is a bit greater.
