Am Vormittag gibts noch ein Indypass-Gebiet: einen Teil der Skiwelt (Wilder Kaiser): Von Aschau, 5 Minuten von Kirchberg entfernt, führt eine Gondelbahn hoch zur Skischaukel Westendorf - unten Gondelbahnen, oben ein paar fixgeklemmte Lifte (ok, einen neuen Sessellift hats auch). 

Die Pisten oben sind kurz und nett, die Talabfahrten - vor allem die von ganz zu oberst (Choralpe?) nach Brixen und Westendorf – sind der Hammer: um die 1000 Höhenmeter und einige doch ziemlich steile Passagen lassen das Herz aus mehreren Gründen höher schlagen. Auf jeden Fall ein ziemlicher Gegensatz zu den lieblichen Abfahrten am Pengelstein oder von der Fleckalm in Kitzski. 

Für 3 Euro Aufpreis gibts eine Karte für Kitzski und Skiwelt mit dem einfallsreichen Nahmen KitzSkiWelt - wenn man will kommt man von Pass Thurn bis nach Söll, das ist dann schon eine ziemliche Strecke. Auf jeden Fall: Auch wenn es kein eigenständiges Skigebiet ist: Westendorf war wirklich ein Manko auf meiner Liste.  War, zum Glück.

In the morning there’s still time for another Indy Pass area: a part of the SkiWelt (Wilder Kaiser). From Aschau, about five minutes from Kirchberg, a gondola takes you up to the Westendorf ski sector — gondolas in the lower part, and higher up mostly a few fixed-grip lifts (though there is one newer chairlift as well).

The pistes up top are short and pleasant, but the valley runs — especially the ones from the very top (Choralpe?) down to Brixen and Westendorf — are the real highlight: around 1,000 meters of vertical with several quite steep sections that make the heart beat faster for more than one reason. In any case, a pretty strong contrast to the gentle slopes around Pengelstein or the runs from Fleckalm in the KitzSki area.

For a €3 surcharge you can get a combined ticket for KitzSki and SkiWelt with the wonderfully imaginative name KitzSkiWelt. If you really want to, you can ski all the way from Pass Thurn to Söll — which is quite a distance.

In any case: even though it isn’t a standalone ski area, Westendorf had long been a missing piece on my list. Fortunately, not anymore.

Bergeralm

Wir fahren (kriechen( 90 Minuten das Inntal hinauf nach Innsbruck und biegen dann auf die Brennerstrecke, die wir aber für einmal schon bald wieder verlassen, um nach Steinach am Brenner - dem Ort unter der Europabrücke - zu gelangen. 

Tatsächlich unter der Europabrücke liegt aber die Talstation zum kleinen Skigebiet auf der Bergeralm. Eine Gondelbahn hoch zur Bergeralm, von dort als direkte Verlängerung ein längerer Sessellift und zwei kleinere Lifte - that's it, weil heute der Skilift ganz oben (Hochsonnlift) zu ist. 

Was es aber hat: 1200 Höhenmeter, richtige Berge gleich nebenan und eine Erinnerung, dass wir alle Verkehrsinfrastruktur brauchen, um hierher zu gelangen.

We crawl up the Inn Valley for about 90 minutes toward Innsbruck and then turn onto the Brenner route. This time, however, we leave it again quite soon to reach Steinach am Brenner — the village beneath the Europabrücke. The base station of the small Bergeralm ski area actually sits right under the bridge.

From there a gondola takes you up to the Bergeralm. Directly continuing from the top station is a longer chairlift, plus two smaller lifts — that’s it today, because the top drag lift (Hochsonnlift) is closed.

What the area does offer, though, are 1,200 meters of vertical, real mountains right next to you, and a reminder that we rely on all that transport infrastructure to get here in the first place.

Endlich Skiferien!

Eingeweihte wissen vielleicht, dass meine US Reise keine Ferien waren sondern der Bezug meines Dienstaltersgeschenks - Treue lohnt sich manchmal doch! Aber die Ferien müssen trotzdem weg und als Nebenprodukt meines US-Trips habe ich ja noch einen IKON und einen Indy-Plus-Pass! 

Und quasi als Gegenbewegung zum starken Westfokus in der ersten Winterhälfte geht der Blick ab jetzt ostwärts. Und zwar geplant gleich für einige Skitage, Winter 2026/27 inklusive.

Wir fahren nach einer Abendverpflichtung los ab Zürich und erreichen Bludenz, wo wir Station machen und am nächsten Tag rund 1 1/2 Stunden gewinnen auf unserem Weg nach Kirchberg. Dort bleiben wir für 2 Nächte in einem dieser riesigen Tiroler Hotels, gross wie ein Dorf, eine Welt, die ich eigentlich nicht kenne. 

Trotz der gesparten 1 1/2 Stunden kommen wir ziemlich spät in Kirchberg an, und fahren über die Maierlbahn hoch auf die Bergkrete, schauen uns den Start der Streif an, und entscheiden dann bei +15°C angesichts des Nassschnees den Tag zu beenden. 

Am zweiten Tag geht die Reise dann doch weiter, über den Pengelstein hinüber bis zum Trattenbach. Als Temperatur und Schneequalität das gestrige Niveau erreichen drehen wir dann um, und fahren, über einige Almen zurück ins Tal. Was man halt so macht hier. 

Seit meinem letzten Besuch hier haben sich fast alle Lifte erneuert. Schon Wahnsinn, was hier investiert wird auf 1800 Höhenmetern Höhe - der Bergstation, notabene. Und ja, das Gebiet gefällt mir immer noch, auch wenn es etwas flach ist und richtige Berge nur am Horizont zu sehen sind.

Finally, ski holidays!

Those in the know may realize that my U.S. trip wasn’t actually a holiday at all, but rather the redemption of my long-service award — sometimes loyalty does pay off after all! But the vacation days still have to be used somehow, and as a side effect of my U.S. trip I still have both an IKON Pass and an Indy Pass Plus left to enjoy.

And almost as a counter-movement to the strong westward focus of the first half of the winter, my gaze now turns east. In fact, the plan already includes several ski days — extending even into the winter of 2026/27.

After an evening commitment we leave Zurich and reach Bludenz, where we stop for the night. This allows us to save about an hour and a half the next day on the way to Kirchberg. There we stay for two nights in one of those enormous Tyrolean hotels — practically a village in itself — a world I normally don’t know very well.

Despite the time saved in the morning, we arrive in Kirchberg rather late and take the Maierlbahn up to the ridge. We have a look at the start of the Streif and, faced with +15°C temperatures and heavy wet snow, decide to call it a day.

On the second day we venture further after all, crossing the Pengelstein area and skiing all the way over to Trattenbach. Once the temperature and snow quality reach the same level as the day before, we turn around and head back down into the valley via a few alpine huts — the sort of thing people do here.

Since my last visit, almost all the lifts have been replaced. It’s quite astonishing how much investment is happening here — at 1,800 meters elevation, at the mountain stations no less. And yes, I still like the area, even if it is somewhat flat and the real mountains only appear on the horizon.

06. April 2025 SCA-Skisafari 2025: Tag 4 Nauders & Schöneben ** english version below **

Schon schön eben: vorne See, hinten Ortler

Nach dem Frühstück packen wir, checken aus und fahren nach Nauders. Die Reschenstrasse ist wegen Bauarbeiten gesperrt, so geht die Strecke kurz über die Schweiz und Martina die Martinsbrucker Strasse hinauf in den letzten Ort in Österreich vor der Italienischen Grenze.

Das weisse Band leuchtet von weitem, auch hier ist die Talabfahrt gesichert. Die Talstation, die für den Ort etwas ungünstig rund 1.5 km ausserhalb liegt, wurde seit meinem letzten Besuch (der ja auch schon wieder lange her ist, 2009) ziemlich aufgepeppt - die Gondelbahn selbst jedoch nicht. Tut es auch so.
Oben im Bergkastel bestaunen wir die breiten Pisten, vor allem die Zirmabfahrt, geniessend die Stieralmabfahrt, den langsamen Lärchenhanglift II und dann einen weiteren der Top-Lifte in den Alpen: den Tscheyeck-Lift, mit rund 800 Höhenmetern nicht ganz so hoch wie vorgestern die Gampenbahn, aber dennoch sehr beeindruckend. 

Nachdem wir noch die neue Goldseebahn mitgenommen haben - auch an diesem Lift hat es eine unglaublich breite Piste, ein Paradies für Anfänger:innen - wechseln wir Land, Talseite und Skigebiet, und fahren nach Schöneben. (Ein Minuspunkt dafür, dass es den Skipass für die Zwei Länder Skiarena, in dem beide Skigebiete verbunden sind, erst ab 2 Tagen gibt.)

Das Skigebiet Schöneben hat sich 2018 mit dem benachbarten, aber dennoch nicht gleich nebenan liegenden Skigebiet Haideralm verbunden, und das gleich mit 3 Gondelbahnen. Dies ist um so bemerkenswerter, als das Gebiete Haideralm nur 2 Lifte und Schöneben nur 5 Lifte hat, die Talabfahrt zwar eine schöne Aussicht aber sonst den Charakter eines breiten Ziehwegs hat und sowieso keine durchgehende Talabfahrt nach St. Valentin möglich ist, weil für das letzte Stück die Gondel genommen werden muss.

Nun, es gibt ja eigentlich keine unnötigen Skilifte und Skigebiete (ausser diesem hier), deshalb geniessen wir die tolle Aussicht und denken nicht mehr über Sinn und Unsinn dieser 20 Millionen € Investition nach.

After breakfast, we pack up, check out, and head toward Nauders. Due to roadworks, the Reschen road is closed, so the route briefly takes us through Switzerland and up the Martinsbrucker road via Martina, into the last Austrian village before the Italian border.

The white ribbon of the ski slope is visible from afar, and the valley run here is also open. The base station – located somewhat inconveniently about 1.5 km outside the town – has seen some updates since my last visit (which, to be fair, was a while ago, back in 2009), though the gondola itself remains unchanged. Still, it does the job.

At the top of the Bergkastel area, we take in the wide pistes – especially the Zirm run. We enjoy the descent to the Stieralm, take the slow Lärchenhang lift II, and then ride one of the top lifts in the Alps: the Tscheyeck lift. With around 800 meters of vertical, it doesn’t quite reach the height of the Gampenbahn from two days ago, but it’s still an impressive ride.

After taking a ride on the new Goldsee-chairlift – which also features an incredibly wide slope, ideal for beginners – we change countries, valley sides, and ski areas, heading to Schöneben. (A small downside: the ski pass for the “Two Countries Ski Arena,” which covers both areas, is only available for two days or more.)

The Schöneben ski area merged in 2018 with the neighboring – though not exactly adjacent – Haideralm ski area, and did so with three gondola lifts. This is particularly notable considering Haideralm only has two lifts and Schöneben five. The valley run offers scenic views but is more of a wide traverse than a true descent, and there's no continuous run down to St. Valentin since the final stretch requires taking a gondola.

Still, unnecessary ski lifts and ski resorts don’t really exist (except perhaps this one), so we enjoy the beautiful views and leave the question of whether this €20 million investment made sense aside.

05. April 2025 SCA-Skisafari 2025: Tag 3 SERFAUS-FISS-LADIS ** english version below **

Heute: Serfaus, zum vierten Mal insgesamt und zum ersten Mal seit 15 Jahren:
01/2009, 12/2009, 03/2010 und 04/2025 - ich hab mich also auch schon heimischer gefühlt hier.

Was geblieben ist: Das Gebiet kann richtig viel. Eigentlich mehr als Ischgl. Es ist weitläufiger, hat mehr steile Pisten und die Aussicht ist auch schöner. Aber toll sind beide.

Ganz zum Schluss gabs dann noch ein Schmankerl: Die Abfahrt zur Zwölferbahn über eine total leere Piste, perfekt für die müden Beine, war ein Genuss. Wir entschieden uns aber dagegen, sie noch einmal zu fahren, weil, wenn man zu oft dieselbe Piste fährt, gibt es Risiken! (Gute Besserung!)

Today: Serfaus – my fourth time here and the first in 15 years: 01/2009, 12/2009, 03/2010, and now 04/2025 – so I’ve definitely felt more familiar with the place in the past.

What hasn’t changed: this area really offers a lot. In fact, more than Ischgl in some ways. It’s more expansive, has steeper runs, and the views are arguably better. Still, both are excellent in their own right.

To finish the day, there was a real highlight: the run down to the Zwölferbahn – an entirely empty slope, ideal for tired legs – was pure enjoyment. We decided not to repeat it though. After all, repeating the same run too many times can come with risks. (Wishing a speedy recovery!)

04. April 2025 SCA-Skisafari 2025: Tag 2 ISCHGL-SAMNAUN ** english version below **

 

Tag 2 der Skisafari führt uns über Spliss nach Samnaun. Schönstes Wetter heisst knallharte Pisten, das Fahren über die Pistenrillen erzeugt einen Höllenlärm. Ich habe mich für den KORE 93 entschieden, weil ich sicher bin, dass der Schnee am Nachmittag weich wird. Aber bis dorthin ist es noch ein weiter und harter Weg, ich rutsche nur so über die manchmal an Eis grenzenden Pisten.

Zuerst besuchen wir Alp Bella, dann Idalp, von dort zur Greitspitze, Höllboden, Palinkopf, Gampenalp, Ischgl, Pardatschgrat (Lunchbreak), Ischgl, Pardatschgrat, Velilleck, Höllboden, Palinkopf, Höllboden, Höllspitze, Gampenalp, und schliesslich - nach einer schönen Gemsensichtung auf der Talabfahrt - Samnaun.

Meine Skientscheidung hat sich erst ganz am Schluss bezahlt gemacht, als meine Beine bereits müde waren, So dass sich für die folgenden Tage ein neues Optimierungsproblem abzeichnet: Ich habe zwei Paar Ski dabei – Die einen sind gut für harte Pisten, der KORE ist gut für den Frühlingsschnee.

Doch ich kann nur ein Paar wählen.

Wird der Schnee weich, bevor meine Beine müde sind?
Oder quäle ich mich mit den falschen Ski über die harte Piste, nur um am Nachmittag die Belohnung nicht mehr auskosten zu können?

Neuer Lift: Velilleckbahn

Day 2 of the ski safari takes us via Spliss to Samnaun. The weather is perfect, which means rock-hard slopes. Riding over the corduroy ridges makes a hellish noise. I opted for the KORE 93s, confident that the snow would soften by the afternoon. But getting to that point is a long and tough ride — I’m more sliding than carving over slopes that are borderline icy at times.

We start with a visit to Alp Bella, then head to Idalp, from there to Greitspitze, Höllboden, Palinkopf, Gampenalp, Ischgl, Pardatschgrat (lunch break), then again Ischgl, Pardatschgrat, Velilleck, Höllboden, Palinkopf, Höllboden, Höllspitze, Gampenalp, and finally — after spotting some beautiful chamois on the valley descent — we reach Samnaun.

My ski choice only truly paid off at the very end, when my legs were already tired. So now a new optimization problem presents itself for the coming days:
Will the snow soften before my legs give out?

I brought two pairs of skis — one is great for hard-packed pistes, the KOREs are perfect for soft spring snow.

But I can only choose one.
