Grand Tour Of The North - Abschluss / Final

Zurück in der Schweiz bleibt mir die Freude, die Reise noch einmal zu durchleben beim Schreiben der Blogeinträge und beim Erstellen der Karte. 

Die Fahrten durch die Weiten des Wilden Westens, die überraschend tollen Skierlebnisse an Bergen, die doch um einiges kleiner sind als in den Alpen, die zahlreichen schönen Begegnungen, das McBreakfast für den Weg durch die Steppe, um an einer Backbowl zu staunen, welches Terrain den Skifahrern eröffnet wird, wo in Europa schon längst dicke rote Absperrnetze den Weg versperren würden... dieser Roadtrip mit Ski (Danke Christian für den Namen) war weit, wunderschön und macht Lust auf weitere Wintertage im Nordwesten der USA. Da fehlen ja noch ein paar Gebiete....

Back in Switzerland, I am delighted to relive the trip while writing the blog entries and creating the map. 

The trips through the vastness of the Wild West, the surprisingly great skiing experiences on mountains that are nevertheless much smaller than in the Alps, the numerous beautiful encounters, the McBreakfast for the way through the steppe to marvel at a backbowl, which terrain is opened to skiers, where in Europe already thick red barrier nets would block the way... this road trip with ski (thanks Christian for the name) was far, beautiful and makes you want to spend more winter days in the northwest of the USA. There are still a few areas missing....

14 January 2022: 3 Staaten - 4 Gebiete - 493 Meilen: White Pine* (WY), Beaver Mt* (UT), Cherry Peak (UT), Pebble Creek (ID) - 3 states - 4 resorts

WHITE PINE (WYOMING)

Weg von Pinedale nach White Pine

Einen Elch habe ich nicht gesehen - es hätte ein Highlight werden können. So ist es die Fahrt durch Pinedale hinauf zum Skigebiet White Pine am Fusse der Wind River Range, das überraschenderweise unter der Woche geöffnet ist: Pinedale hat 2000 Einwohner, die nächsten Ortschaften Boulder (52 Einwohner / 22 Miles) Big Piney (552 Einw. / 48 Miles), La Barge (551 Einw. / 67 Miles), Farson (322 Einw./70 Miles) sind nicht gerade das, was ich als Einzugsgebiet bezeichne. Mir ist es noch so recht. Mit dem Indypass bekomme ich meine Tageskarte im Gebiet White Pine, die mich berechtigen, mit zwei anderen Gästen die beiden Lifte zu befahren und das ganze Gebiet zu teilen. Ein kurzes Vergnügen auf den Ski, doch das lange Vergnügen ist heute garantiert.

I didn't see an elk - it could have been a highlight. So it is the drive through Pinedale up to the ski resort White Pine at the foot of the Wind River Range, which is surprisingly open during the week: Pinedale has 2000 inhabitants, the next villages are Boulder (52 inhabitants / 22 Miles) Big Piney (552 inhabitants / 48 Miles), La Barge (551 inhabitants / 67 Miles), Farson (322 inhabitants / 70 Miles) are not exactly what I call a large catchment area (well it0's large, but no one lives here...). It's still fine with me. With the Indypass I get my day pass in the White Pine area, which entitles me to ski the two lifts with two other guests and share the whole area. A short pleasure on the skis, but the long pleasure is guaranteed today.

BEAVER MOUNTAIN (UTAH)

Ich erreiche Beaver Mountain zur Rush Hour. Freitag und der Parkplatz ist voll. Die Greater Area Logan mit über 125'000 Einwohner bietet ein anderes Einzugsgebiet als Pinedale. Das Skigebiet ist klein aber fein und erschliesst zwei Gipfel. Marges Tripple und Harry's Dream erschliessen etwas längere Abfahrten, Beavers Face und Little Beaver kürzere. Das Gebiet hat keine steilen Abfahrten, macht aber Spass.

I reach Beaver Mountain at rush hour. Friday and the parking lot is full. The Greater Area Logan with over 125'000 inhabitants offers a different catchment area than Pinedale. The ski resort is small but nice and accesses two peaks. Marges Tripple and Harry's Dream open up slightly longer runs, Beavers Face and Little Beaver shorter runs. The area has no steep runs, but is fun.

CHERRY PEAK (UTAH, 46 MEILEN)

Das kleine Gebiet Cherry Peak – ebenfalls im Einzugsgebiet Logan – liegt auf dem Weg zu meinem Ziel und hat gerade noch geöffnet, als ich um 3.30pm eintreffe. Für ein paar Fahrten auf dem kurzen Sessellift reicht es, die Backbowl ist bereits geschlossen, was nicht so tragisch ist, weil der längste Lift des Gebiets wegen Schneemangel nicht geöffnet wird.

The small Cherry Peak area - also in the Logan catchment - is on the way to my destination and is just open when I arrive at 3.30pm. It is enough for a few rides on the short chairlift, the Backbowl is already closed, which is not so tragic, because the longest lift of the area is not opened due to lack of snow.

PEBBLE CREEK (IDAHO, 77 MEILEN)

Die Fahrt (Highway 91, Interstate 15) führt durch den Sonnenuntergang und die Dämmerung und über die Grenze wieder zurück nach Idaho. Ich verlasse die Interstate im Nebel und fahre hinauf zum Pebble Creek in der Hoffnung, dass das Gebiet über dem Nebel liegt – berechtigt, ich erwische das letzte Licht und erlebe Pebble Creek in den schönsten Farben! Es ist Nachtskifahren, ein Lift läuft, und hier habe ich das Gefühl, etwas zu verpassen: Die oberen beiden Sessellifte (Skyline, Sunshine) versprechen einiges an Spass, der laufende Aspen-Lift ist dann für den Anfang. Oder den Abschluss des Tages. Ich bedanke mich für den wunderschönen Abend und fahre nach Pocatello, der nahegelegenen Stadt (50'000 Einwohner).

The ride (Highway 91, Interstate 15) takes me through sunset and dusk and across the border back into Idaho. I leave the interstate in the fog and drive up to Pebble Creek hoping that the area is above the fog - justified, I catch the last light and experience Pebble Creek in the most beautiful colors! It's night skiing, one lift is running, and here I feel like I'm missing out: The top two chairlifts (Skyline, Sunshine) promise some fun, then the running Aspen lift is for starters. Or the end of the day. I thank for the wonderful evening and drive to Pocatello, the nearby town (50'000 inhabitants).

13 January 2022 Jackson Hole - Another best in America?

Heute steht DAS Gebiet auf dem Programm, das mir in Nordamerika noch fehlt: Jackson Hole. Das Skigebiet liegt etwas weiter weg von Jackson als ich gedacht habe und begrüsst die Ankommenden mit einer grossen Lodge und einem Parkplatz mit einer Tagesgebühr $30.

Today on the program is THE area that I am still missing in North America: Jackson Hole. The ski resort is a bit further away from Jackson than I thought and welcomes the arrivals with a large lodge and a parking lot with a daily fee of $30.

Das Gebiet ähnelt Bridger Bowl in gross: Von vorne betrachtet befindet sich rechts am Aprés-Vous Mountain der leichtere Bereich und links beim Rendez-Vous Mountain der schwierigste. Wobei Jackson Hole viele Nuancen mehr bietet (aber keinen LVS-only Lift): Der Apres-Vous Mountain hat schöne sportliche Abfahrten, beim Teton-Lift wird es bereits steil, beim Casper-Chair wieder etwas weniger, und bei der Rendez-Vous-Lodge wirds wieder steiler und schöne Bowls hat es dann beim Thunder-Chair, Sublette-Chair und natürlich vom Aerial-Tram aus. Auf den Sprung in Corbet's Couloir verzichte ich, doch die Laramie Bowl, Tensleep Bowl, Saratoga Bowl und die Rawlins Bowl befahre ich. Das Highlight ist die Abfahrt am South Hoback, am Südende des Gebiets, mit einigen schönen Hängen der Resort Boundary entlang. Jackson Hole macht grossen Spass. Von der Grösse her kann es nicht mit den ganz Grossen Europas mithalten, doch die Anzahl der Abfahrten ist schlicht beeindruckend. Ich hoffe sehr, dass ich hier wieder einmal herkomme.

The area is similar to Bridger Bowl in large: Viewed from the front, the easier area is on the right at Aprés-Vous Mountain and the most difficult on the left at Rendez-Vous Mountain. Whereby Jackson Hole offers many nuances more (but no avalanche transceiver-only lift): Apres-Vous Mountain has nice sporty descents, at the Teton lift it is already steep, at Casper-Chair again a little less, and at Rendez-Vous-Lodge it gets steeper again and nice bowls it has then at Thunder-Chair, Sublette-Chair and of course from the Aerial-Tram. I don't do the jump into Corbet's Couloir, but I do the Laramie Bowl, Tensleep Bowl, Saratoga Bowl and the Rawlins Bowl. The highlight is the run down South Hoback, at the south end of the area, with some nice slopes along the Resort Boundary. Jackson Hole is great fun. In terms of size, it can't compete with the big ones in Europe, but the number of runs is simply impressive. I really hope to come back here again.

Grand Targhee liegt gleich (25 Minuten) neben unserer Location in Driggs. Die $93 finden wir eher zu teuer für die 3 Lifte, die nebeneinander aufgereiht hochführen, und den Anfängerlift. Doch die Abfahrten vor allem am Dreamcatcher und Blackfoot machen Spass. Der Sacajewa-Lift wäre eigentlich das Gateway zum Freeride- und Catski-Bereich, doch erstens gibt's heute kein Catski und zweitens ist der Schnee hart gepresst. Doch die Aussicht auf die Grand Tetons hilft das zu wieder gut zu machen.

Grand Targhee is right (25 minutes) next to our location in Driggs. We find the $93 rather too expensive for the 3 lifts that go up side by side, and the beginner lift. But the runs especially at Dreamcatcher and Blackfoot are fun. The Sacayeva lift would actually be the gateway to the freeride and catski area, but first of all there's no catski today and secondly the snow is hard packed. But the view of the Grand Tetons helps to compensate for that.

Wir geben uns eine 90 minütige Reise und ein exotisches Skigebiet: Kelly Canyon. Ein kleines Resort in einem kleinen Canyon mit 4 Liften (einer davon läuft nicht) und einigen Abfahrten aller normaler Schwierigkeitsgrade und am Nordende des Gebiets etwas Terrain, auf das wir aber verzichten. Wir haben Spass auf den flachen Pisten und cruisen durch die Bäume. Gestern Big Sky, heute Kelly Canyon - und in beiden Gebieten hatten wir grossen Spass! 

We give ourselves a 90 minute trip and an exotic ski resort: Kelly Canyon. A small resort in a small canyon with 4 lifts (one not running) and some runs of all normal difficulty and some terrain at the north end of the area, but we pass on that. We have fun on the flat runs and cruise through the trees. Yesterday Big Sky, today Kelly Canyon - and in both areas we had great fun!

Jackson Snow King (Wyoming)

Wir fahren über den Pine Creek Pass (2064m) und den Teton Pass (2570m) nach Jackson. Das bekanntere Jackson Hole besuchen wir morgen. Heute Abend gibt es ein paar Nacht-Fahrten am Jackson Snow King und eine atemberaubende Aussicht auf Jackson. Den Après Ski im Städtchen brechen wir dann angesichts der nichtexistierenden COVID-Konzepte ab. Nicht, dass es in Montana welche gegeben hätte, aber die Cowboy Bar war uns schlicht zu voll.

We drive over Pine Creek Pass (2064m) and Teton Pass (2570m) to Jackson. We will visit the more famous Jackson Hole tomorrow. Tonight there will be some night riding at the Jackson Snow King and a breathtaking view of Jackson. We then cancel the après ski in the little town in view of the non-existent COVID concepts. Not that there were any in Montana, but the Cowboy Bar was simply too crowded for us.
