Es hat über Nacht nicht so viel geschneit wie gehofft befürchtet.
Um Ironwood hat es gleich mehrere Skigebiete, das ist wohl der Grund, weshalb hier an diesem langen Wochenende (am Montag ist Martin Luther King Tag) die Motels voll sind. Ich fahre ins Gebiet Snowriver Mountain, das aus zwei Skibergen besteht - Jackson Creek und Black River
Snowriver Mountain - diesen Namen muss man sich zuerst ein paar Mal durch den Kopf gehen lassen. Er ist natürlich ein Konstrukt (2022 eingeführt als Ersatz für Big Snow Resort), drückt aber ziemlich gut aus, was man hier erwarten kann:
Viel Schnee, und zwei Skigebiete (mit demselben Ticket fahrbar), die aus demselben Flusstal auf umliegende Hügel führen (und die mit einem Shuttle im Talgrund miteinander verbunden sind).
Jackson Creek ist das einfacher zugängliche Gebiet, und wird hauptsächlich von oben angefahren, wo auch die (hier wieder einladende) Lodge ist. Ein moderner 6er-Sessellift strahlt Moderne aus, auch wenn die anderen Lifte allesamt alt sind. Die Abfahrten sind schon ziemlich flach, etwas überraschend, dass hier Rennen (Riesenslalom) gefahren werden.
Black River Basin ist wohl etwas schwieriger erreichbar, hier ist die Lodge im Talboden, dort stehen auch mehr Autos. Die gehören aber fast alle zum Skirennen, das auch hier gefahren wird - weil es hier ein wenig steiler ist ist es ein Slalom. Weil alle am Rennen sind, gibt es viel unverfahrener Tiefschnee auf der Piste - die 30cm lockerster Pulver auf der präparierten Piste am Capstan Lift waren etwas vom Besten, was ich in vielen Jahren gefahren bin.

Overnight, there was not as much snowfall as I had hoped feared.
Around Ironwood there are several ski areas, which probably explains why all the motels are fully booked this long weekend (Monday is Martin Luther King Day). I head to Snowriver Mountain, a ski area made up of two separate mountains: Jackson Creek and Black River.
Snowriver Mountain – a name you have to roll around in your head a few times first. It is clearly a constructed name (introduced in 2022 to replace Big Snow Resort), but it actually describes quite well what to expect here: lots of snow, and two ski areas that can be skied on a single ticket. Both rise from the same river valley onto the surrounding hills and are connected by a shuttle running along the valley floor.
Jackson Creek is the more easily accessible of the two areas and is mainly approached from above, where the lodge is also located. The lodge is welcoming again, and a modern six-pack chairlift adds a touch of modernity, even though all the other lifts are rather old. The runs themselves are quite flat, which makes it somewhat surprising that races (giant slalom) are held here.
Black River Basin is probably a bit harder to access. Here, the lodge sits on the valley floor, and this is also where more cars are parked. Almost all of them belong to the ski race taking place that day. Because the terrain here is a little steeper, the race is a slalom. With most people focused on racing, there is plenty of untracked powder left on the pistes. The roughly 30 cm of light, dry powder on the groomed run off the Capstan lift is among the best skiing I have experienced in many years.
