In autumn 2023, we passed through Nub’s Nob and The Highlands. At the time, I said that I wanted to come back to ski here – and now I am finally here, grateful and happy. Both ski areas are located in mainland Michigan. It is Martin Luther King Day, a long weekend, and accordingly it is busy.
Nub’s Nob (123 metres vertical)
I am not entirely sure why, but this ski resort has firmly established itself in my mind as a must-visit destination in Michigan. Is it the name? The stories? Or the memories of our visit in autumn 2023, when the resort was slowly getting ready for the season? In any case, I feel like a small child again as I turn into the full parking lot.
There is a lot of activity here – many, many people, young and old, all wanting to ski. And so do I.
The area wraps around the hill for roughly 270 degrees, with two lifts on the front side (rather steep), two lifts on the back side (less steep), and one lift rising from the 9 o’clock position (easier) up to the small summit plateau. The runs are not long, but they are perfectly groomed – hardly surprising with 300 snowmaking guns and plenty of natural snow falling from above. A carving paradise with glades. Exactly how I had imagined it.
The Highlands (168 metres vertical)
As so often, you think you have plenty of time – and then you suddenly have to hurry. I leave Nub’s Nob a bit too quickly and drive the four kilometres across the flat valley to the other side. There lies something like the wealthy uncle of Nub’s Nob Some people clearly seem to prefer one over the other. At least that is how I interpreted the tone of a local on the chairlift at Nub’s Nob when I asked him about The Highlands.
Here, almost all the lifts are new. There is even a bubble chairlift – the first one I have seen on this trip. However, the bubble is not lowered even in snowfall and wind. Just like the safety bar, that seems to be something for Europeans.
The terrain largely covers the same aspect as Nub’s Nob, with the exception of the North Peak lift, which serves a north-facing slope. The runs are longer, but apart from the terrain around the Heather Express and the Challenger lift, they are mostly easy.
I am cutting it very close and just manage to ride the Interconnect and the North Peak before they close.
If I had to choose between the two neighbouring resorts, I would probably go with Nub’s Nob, as the proportion of more interesting runs is higher. But both are very good.
