Bereits 2016 durfte ich eine tolle Zeit in Frisco verbringen, Damals besuchte ich Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper, Beaver Creek und Vail. Obwohl Frisco selbst kein eigenes Skigebiet hat, bietet der Ort eine ideale Ausgangslage für die umliegenden Resorts – inklusive eines kostenlosen Skibus-Systems.
Was ich bei meinem Aufenthalt vor neun Jahren nicht besucht habe, ist Loveland. Das hole ich nun nach.
Loveland ist von Frisco aus in rund 20 Minuten erreichbar, getrennt lediglich durch den Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel. Gleichzeitig gehört Loveland zu den Skigebieten, die Denver am nächsten liegen, und ist von dort in etwa einer Stunde erreichbar. Umso überraschender ist es, dass wir ohne Probleme einen Parkplatz bei der Loveland Valley Lodge finden.
Ein Shuttle-Service im Fünf-Minuten-Takt verbindet die Valley Lodge mit der Basin Lodge. Während bei der Valley Lodge zwei Lifte stehen, erschliessen von der Basin Lodge aus sieben weitere Lifte das eigentliche Skigebiet. Der Busservice ersetzt aus Kostengründen einen Verbindungssessellift, der noch mit Masten und Sesseln über den Parkplatz bei Basin führt.
Von den zahlreichen Skigebieten der Region, die aktuell mit Schneemangel zu kämpfen haben, bietet Loveland zumindest einen eingeschränkten, aber funktionierenden Betrieb. Drei Lifte mit Südexposition sind geschlossen, dafür sind immerhin sechs andere in Betrieb.
Das Loveland Basin - Höhe der Talstation auf 3290m! - liegt am Ende des Tals, direkt oberhalb des Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnels, und erschliesst eine weitläufige, baumfreie Arena mit Hängen in nahezu alle Richtungen – unter normalen Bedingungen beinahe 360 Grad. An diesem Tag bleiben mir einige Abfahrten an den Nordhängen und die Dankbarkeit, diese überhaupt fahren zu können.
Nach diesem kurzen Besuch fahren wir weiter über Idaho Springs, Central City und Nederland nach Boulder. Eine landschaftlich schöne Strecke – mit einer unerwarteten Überraschung in Central City: ein kleines Städtchen mit spürbarem Humor.

Back in 2016, I already had the opportunity to spend some very good days in Frisco. At the time, I visited Keystone, Arapahoe Basin, Breckenridge, Copper, Beaver Creek, and Vail. Although Frisco itself does not have its own ski area, it offers an ideal base for the surrounding resorts – including a free ski bus system.
One resort I did not visit during my stay nine years ago was Loveland. This time, I am making up for that.
Loveland is about a 20-minute drive from Frisco, separated only by the Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel. At the same time, it is one of the ski areas closest to Denver and can be reached from there in roughly an hour. All the more surprising is the fact that we find a parking space at the Loveland Valley Lodge without any difficulty.
A shuttle service running every five minutes connects the Valley Lodge with the Basin Lodge. While two lifts operate from the Valley Lodge, seven additional lifts serving the main ski area depart from the Basin Lodge. For cost reasons, the bus service replaces a connecting chairlift, which still stands over the parking lot at the Basin Lodge with its towers and chairs in place.
Among the many ski areas in the region currently struggling with limited snow, Loveland at least offers a restricted but functional operation. Three lifts with southern exposure are closed, but six others are running.
The Loveland Basin – with the base area already at an elevation of 3,290 metres – lies at the end of the valley, directly above the Eisenhower–Johnson Tunnel. It opens up a wide, treeless arena with slopes facing almost every direction – under normal conditions nearly 360 degrees. On this day, I am left with a few runs on the north-facing slopes, and with a sense of gratitude for being able to ski them at all.
After this short visit, we continue on via Idaho Springs, Central City, and Nederland towards Boulder. It is a scenic drive, with an unexpected highlight in Central City: a small town with a noticeable sense of humour.
