Ich weiss nicht, wann ich das zum letzten Mal erlebt habe: Seit Tagen ist es nun richtig kalt, es geht nicht über -5° C hinauf und es soll noch kälter werden. WINTER! Heute schaue ich mir bei diesem Wintersturm weitere Gebiete in Michigan an.

Boyne Mountain (152m)
Boyne Resorts ist der drittgrösste Player im nordamerikanischen Skibusiness. Das Unternehmen (das sich als independent bezeichnet) besitzt u.a. Big Sky in Montana und sonst noch so einige Überraschungen, vgl. https://www.stormskiing.com/p/boyne-resorts-launches-unlimited.
Der Stammhügel befindet sich aber in Boyne Michigan. Vom Resort ziehen 9 Lifte den Hügel hinauf. Die Abfahrten auf der östlichen (linken) Seite sind dabei durchaus interessant und haben ein schönes Gefälle, die meisten Abfahrten auf der westlichen Seite (ab Lift Boyneland) hingegen nicht, was mehrheitlich auch für den 8er Sessellift "Disciples 8" gilt.
Als ich auf dem Alpine-Lift sitze, der wirklich kaum Höhenmeter macht, wird mir wieder bewusst, dass Skigebiet-Business in den USA fast immer auch Immobilien-Business bedeutet: Der Alpine-Lift ist ein Zubringerlift von den zahlreichen schönen Häusern, die da im Wald verteilt sind. Sonst brauchts den Lift nicht.
Beeindruckend für mich: Die Schneekanonen feuern trotz massivem Schneefall. So kommt es, dass der Tiefschnee zum Teil nicht aus dem wunderbar lockeren Normalschnee besteht, sondern aus dem kompakteren technischen Schnee. Daran muss man sich auch zuerst gewöhnen.
Lifte (7): Meadows, Boyneland, Disciples 8, Alpine, Mountain Express, Victor, Superbowl
Otsego Resort (91m)
Zum Skigebiet des Resorts schreibt https://www.skiresort.ch/skigebiet/otsego-gaylord/pistenplan/: "Kein öffentliches Skigebiet - beschränkter Zugang." Das war mir nicht bewusst, als ich das Ticket vorgestern online kaufte. Und ich glaube, die sind froh um mich und um jeden, der die über mehrere Hügel verteilten, aber nur wenige Höhenmeter erschliessenden Lift befährt. Wenn es nicht so flach wäre würde ich sogar meinen, dass die Anordnung des Gebiets mindestens so spannend ist wie in Boyne. Aber die 60 Höhenmeter weniger spürt man dann eben schon. (Achtung; Es gibt auch ein Otsego in Michigan, das 3 1/2 Stunden entfernt ist, vgl. meine Schuss Mountain Erfahrungen)

Das Gebiet Schuss Mountain wird oft auch als "Shanty Creek Resorts - Schuss Mountain" bezeichnet. Das führt dann bei unsauberer Eingabe bei Google Maps dazu, dass ich vor dem Lakeview Shanty Creek Resort lande, was zwar beeindruckend ist, aber eben nicht das Skigebiet. So eiere ich im Schneegestöber durch durch weisse flache Landschaft, bis ich dann doch in einem anderen Resort lande (Cedar River Village), das aber zum Gebiet gehört. Auch dieser Hügel wird von 4 Liften erschlossen, auf der Seite nach Schuss Village sind die Abfahrten ein bisschen länger und steiler. Alles in Allem ist es mir aber zu kalt, um hier mehr Zeit zu verbringen.
Lifte (4): Purple Lift, Pink Lift, Yellow Lift, Red Lift
I honestly cannot remember the last time I experienced this: for days now it has been properly cold. Temperatures have not risen above –5°C, and it is forecast to get even colder. Winter. In the middle of this winter storm, I am heading out today to explore more ski areas in Michigan.
Boyne Mountain (152 m)
Boyne Resorts is the third-largest player in the North American ski industry. The company, which describes itself as independent, owns Big Sky in Montana among several other surprises (see: stormskiing.com).
Its home hill, however, is located in Boyne, Michigan. Nine lifts serve the mountain. The runs on the eastern (left) side are genuinely interesting, with a pleasant and consistent pitch. In contrast, most runs on the western side (accessed from the Boyneland lift) are noticeably flatter, which largely also applies to the 8-seat chair Disciples 8.
While riding the Alpine lift – which gains very little vertical – I am once again reminded that skiing in the US is almost always also a real-estate business. The Alpine lift primarily serves as an access lift for the many beautiful houses scattered through the forest. Without them, there would be little reason for this lift to exist.
What really impresses me: the snow guns are firing even during heavy natural snowfall. As a result, some of the powder is not the wonderfully light natural snow one might expect, but a denser layer of machine-made snow. That is something you need to get used to first.

Otsego Resort (91 m)
On skiresort.ch, the ski area is described as follows: “Not a public ski area – restricted access.” I was not aware of this when I bought my ticket online two days ago. And honestly, I think they are quite happy to see me – and anyone else – riding their lifts, which are spread over several hills but offer very limited vertical.
If the terrain were not so flat, I would even say that the layout of the area is at least as interesting as Boyne’s. But the additional 60 metres of vertical at Boyne make a noticeable difference. (Note: there is also another Otsego in Michigan, about 3½ hours away – see my experiences at Schuss Mountain.)

Schuss Mountain (106 m)
Schuss Mountain is often referred to as Shanty Creek Resorts – Schuss Mountain. If you are not careful when entering it into Google Maps, you may end up at Lakeview Shanty Creek Resort – impressive, yes, but not the ski area. That is exactly what happened to me.
So I end up wandering through blowing snow across a white, flat landscape, until I finally reach another resort, Cedar River Village, which does in fact belong to the ski area. This hill is also served by four lifts. On the Schuss Village side, the runs are slightly longer and a bit steeper.
All in all, however, it is simply too cold for me to spend much more time here.
