Alles hat ein Ende nur die Wurst.... heute ist der letzte Tag meiner Reise, an dem ich auf den Ski stehe. Den emotionalen Rückblick auf die vergangenen 6 Wochen spare ich mir für später, jetzt gibt's mal die beiden Gebiete des Tages.
Everything comes to an end – and today is the last day of my trip that I will spend on skis. I will save the emotional reflection on the past six weeks for later; for now, it’s time to focus on today’s two resorts.
Montage Mountain Resort (Pennsylvania, 309m Höhenunterschied)
Scranton hat The Office, einen Ex-US-Präsidenten, war die erste Stadt mit elektrischer Strassenbahn (Electric City) - Scranton hat aber vor allem ein Skigebiet, das von Downtown in 15 Minuten erreichbar ist. Das Gebiet ist interessant erschlossen: Die (ziemlich coole) Lodge liegt in der Mitte des Gebiets. Von dort aufwärts liegen die einfachen Anfängerpisten, und von der Lodge abwärts führen die anspruchsvolleren Abfahrten in ein engeres Tal hinein, wo zwei Sessellifte wieder hinausführen - einer davon direkt zum Parkplatz. Ziemlich cooles Konzept, kann mir vorstellen, dass es an den Wochenenden hier ziemlich abgeht.
Scranton has The Office, a former U.S. president, and was the first city with an electric streetcar – “Electric City.” But above all, Scranton has a ski resort that can be reached from downtown in just 15 minutes. The layout of the area is quite interesting: the (pretty cool) lodge sits right in the middle of the resort. From there upward are the gentle beginner slopes, while from the lodge downward the more challenging runs lead into a narrower valley, where two chairlifts bring you back up – one of them directly to the parking lot. A really cool concept. I can easily imagine that things get pretty lively here on weekends.

Mountain Creek (New Jersey, 317m Höhenunterschied)
Bereits heute an einem Donnerstag geht es ziemlich ab in meinem letzten Gebiet auf dieser Reise: Mountain Creek in New Jersey. Vielleicht liegt es daran, dass es von hier nur (staufrei) 1 Stunde 15 Minuten sind bis nach Manhattan, wahrscheinlich aber auch daran, dass das Gebiet ziemlich toll ist. Es werden drei (benannte!) Gipfel erschlossen: Vernon Peak, Granite Peak (war da nicht was?) und South Peak. Die Abfahrten sind ziemlich lang, es hat am South Peak zwei auskuppelbare Lifte und einen seeeehr langen Verbindungssessel Sojourn Double - und es hat sogar eine Cabrio-Bahn, die von der Hauptlodge hochführt. Diese Skischaukel über verschiedene Gipfel ist nochmals eine überraschende Abwechslung zu den zahlreichen Gebieten der letzten Tage, bei denen die Lifte nur eine Seite eines Hügels erschliessen. Schön, einen solchen letzten Eindruck mitnehmen zu dürfen.
Even on a Thursday, things are already pretty busy at my final resort of the trip: Mountain Creek in New Jersey. Maybe it’s because Manhattan is only about an hour and fifteen minutes away (without traffic), but probably also because the resort itself is simply very good. Three named peaks are served here: Vernon Peak, Granite Peak (doesn’t that name ring a bell?), and South Peak. The runs are quite long, South Peak features two detachable lifts, and there’s the veeeery long connecting chair, the Sojourn Double – plus even a gondola-style Cabriolet lift leading up from the main lodge. This interconnected ski area across several peaks is a refreshing change from the many resorts of the last few days, where lifts only served one side of a single hill. A wonderful final impression to take with me.

Und dann sitze ich wieder im Auto. Das war's also. Im Sonnenlicht des späteren Nachmittags fahre ich in Richtung Jersey City, wo ich das letzte Hotel habe, und komme gerade noch dort an, bevor das Tageslicht ganz weg ist. Die Skyline vom Lower Manhattan hat einige Hochhäuser, die mehr Höhenmeter haben als viele der Skigebiete, die ich in den letzten Wochen gefahren bin. Crazy.
And then I’m back in the car. That’s it. In the late afternoon sunlight, I drive toward Jersey City, where my last hotel awaits, arriving just before daylight fades completely. The skyline of Lower Manhattan features several skyscrapers with more vertical drop than many of the ski areas I’ve skied over the past weeks. Crazy.
