10 January 2022 - Yellowstone-North: Bridger Bowl und Red Lodge*

Das fünfte Highlight ist, dass der Zeh, den ich gestern kräftig ans Bettbein geknallt habe, doch in den Skischuh passt.

Wir bleiben 2 Tage in Bozeman, einer mittelgrossen Stadt und dem angeschickten Gateway zum Yellowstone National Park und vor allem zum Skigebiet Big Sky. Mehr dazu morgen.

Heute besuchen wir die Bridger Bowl - 20 Minuten von Bozeman entfernt - und Red Lodge - 2 Stunden und 30 Minuten von Bridger Bowl entfernt.

The fifth highlight is that the toe, which I banged hard on the bed leg yesterday, fits into the ski boot after all.

We stay 2 days in Bozeman, a medium-sized city and the fancy gateway to Yellowstone National Park and especially to the ski resort Big Sky. More about that tomorrow.

Today we visit Bridger Bowl - 20 minutes from Bozeman - and Red Lodge - 2 hours and 30 minutes from Bridger Bowl.

Bridger Bowl

Das Hausgebiet von Bozeman besticht durch einen super komplizierten Prozess zum Kauf des Skipasses. Am Schalter wird man darauf verwiesen, dass man das Ticket online kaufen muss. Dann braucht es persönliche Angaben und zum Schluss ein Foto. Alles in allem dauerte der Bestellprozess 20 Minuten. Wenn die uns nur nicht fehlen am Ende! Das Gebiet selbst (Typ Passgebiet) bietet von Norden nach Süden immer steilere Hänge, bis am Ende der Lift Schlasman's steht, den man nur mit LVS befahren kann (auch bei null Lawinengefahr wie heute). Merke: Wenn du zur Bridger Bowl willst, kauf das Ticket Online und du kannst das tolle Gebiet ungetrübt geniessen!

Bozeman's home resort impresses with a super complicated process to buy the ski pass. At the ticket office you are told that you have to buy the ticket online. Then it needs personal information and finally a photo. All in all, the ordering process took 20 minutes. If only we don't miss them at the end! The area itself (type pass area) offers steeper and steeper slopes from north to south, until at the end is the lift Schlasman's, which you can only go with avalanche beacon (even with zero avalanche danger as today). Note: If you want to Bridger Bowl, buy the ticket online, bring your avalanche transceiver and you can enjoy the great area unclouded!

Red Lodge

Wir fahren die 2 1/2 Stunden nach Red Lodge, hinaus in die Fläche Montanas und dann wieder hinauf zum Gebiet, das eine der faszinierendsten Aussichten bietet, die ich je sehen durfte, hinaus in die Ebene in Richtung Billings. Und mit der Piste Lazy M eine der tollsten Carving Abfahrten ever. Wir sind begeistert, dabei ist der hintere Teil des Gebiets mit zwei weiteren Liften wegen Schneemangels nicht einmal geöffnet. Ein Comeback-Ort, trotz des langen Wegs.

We drive the 2 1/2 hours to Red Lodge, out into the flat of Montana and then back up to the area that offers one of the most amazing views I've ever had the privilege of seeing, out onto the flat towards Billings. And with the Lazy M run, one of the greatest carving runs ever. We are thrilled, while the back part of the area with two more lifts is not even open due to lack of snow. A comeback destination, even with the drive.

9 January 2022 Discovery and Great Divide

Die Nacht in Butte wurde nicht zu kurz, auch wenn auf der Strasse vor dem Hotel noch einiges abging. Saturday in a mining town. Wir verlassen die Stadt frühmorgens und fahren durch das winterliche sonntägliche Montana, durch die Minenstadt Anaconda, die auf dem Weg zum Gebiet Discovery liegt. 

The night in Butte was not too short, even though there was still a lot going on in the street in front of the hotel. Saturday in a mining town. We leave town early in the morning and drive through wintry Sunday Montana, through the mining town of Anaconda, which is on the way to the Discovery area. 

Discovery

Discovery bietet zwei Seiten (Front- und Backside), die beide noch eine Vergrösserung haben. Auf der Frontside - schöne Pisten am Anaconda Lift - ist der Anhang der Jubilee-Lift mit einfacheren Pisten, auf der Backside - tolle Abfahrten am Granite und Terrain Only am Limelight - wäre die Verlängerung der Silver Chief bis hinunter ins Tal, doch der ist wegen Schneemangel leider geschlossen (Achtung: Der Lift läuft auch bei Schnee nur am Samstag und Sonntag von 12.00-3.30). Und damit können wir die 730 Höhenmeter auch nicht fahren, die Discovery bietet.

Discovery offers two sides (frontside and backside), both have an extension. On the frontside - beautiful slopes at the Anaconda lift - the extension is the Jubilee lift with easier slopes, on the backside - great runs at the Granite and Terrain Only at the Limelight - the extension would be the Silver Chief down to the valley, but this is lift unfortunately closed due to lack of snow (Attention: The lift runs even with snow only on Saturday and Sunday from 12.00-3.30). And with that we can't ride the 730 vertical meters that Discovery offers.

Great Divide

Wir fahren nordwärts durch schönstes Winter-Montana, überqueren auf dem Mac Dondalds pass die Kontinentale Wasserscheide - von jetzt geht alles in den Mississippi - und erreichen Helena, der Hauptstadt von Montana, die gerade 32000 Einwohner hat. Von dort sind es nochmals 20 Minuten bis in die Lodge des kleinen Gebiets Great Divide. Viele Familien und Kinder hat es hier, die Pisten sind auch nicht so steil. Die beiden Bowls, die es westlich und südlich hat, können wir nur zur Hälfte befahren. Die beiden Lifte (Rawhide und Wild West), die uns zurück ins Hauptgebiet bringen würden, sind leider geschlossen. Dennoch machen die Fahrten dort hinunter Spass, Rawhide Ridge mit toller Aussicht befahren wir sogar zwei Mal. Auch hier schliessen wir das Gebiet ab, hinter uns werden die Lifte jeweils zugesperrt.  

We drive north through beautiful winter Montana, cross the Continental Divide on the Mac Dondalds pass - from now on everything goes into the Missispippi - and arrive in Helena, the capital of Montana, with 32000 inhabitants. From there it is another 20 minutes to the lodge of the small resort Great Divide. There are many families and children here, and the slopes are not so steep. The two bowls, that it has to the west and to the south, we can only ski to half. The two lifts (Rawhide and Wild West) that would take us back to the main area are unfortunately closed. Nevertheless, the rides down there are fun, Rawhide Ridge with great views we even ski twice. Here we also close the area, behind us the lifts are closed.

Aber damit noch nicht fertig mit den Highlights:

• Das dritte Highlight ist die Fahrt nach Bozeman durch den Sonnenuntergang in dieser atemberaubenden Landschaft.
• Das vierte Highlight - mit Anlauf - ist, dass Christian seine Ski nun endlich auf dem Flughafen bei Bozeman abholen kann. Wie lange er dafür brauchte ist eine Story für sich.
• Das fünfte Highlight kommt dann erst am morgigen Tag.

But we are not done yet with the highlights:

• The third highlight is the ride to Bozeman through the sunset in this breathtaking landscape.
• The fourth highlight - with a run-up - is that Christian can finally pick up his skis at the airport near Bozeman. How long it took him is a story for itself.
• The fifth highlight comes tomorrow.

8 January 2022 Montana Snowbowl and Lost Trail*

Beim Frühstück in Missoula sitzen wir am grossen Fenster über dem Fluss Clark Fork zeigt sich die Sonne über dem Olympic Mountain - zum ersten Mal seit 4 Tagen! Es wird doch nicht etwa sonnig sein? Dazu ist Samstag....

At the breakfast in Missoula we sit at the big window overlooking the Clark Fork river as the sun shows over the Olympic Mountain - for the first time in 4 days! It's not going to be sunny, is it? Plus it's Saturday....

Montana Snowbowl

... nichts wie los! Wir kommen einigermassen früh weg (die übliche Verspätung gegenüber der wie immer zu optimistischen Planung kommt halt immer dazu) und erreichen den Parkplatz der Montana Snowbowl, des Hausgebiets von Missoula. Wie wir dann beim Marsch zur Kasse merken ist das bereits der Overflow-Parking, es scheint also Leute zu haben. Dennoch warten wir kaum an den Liften, und das ist gut so. Das Gebiet hat tatsächlich zwei Gesichter: Nach vorne hin zur Lodge hat es einige tolle Abfahrten (Spartian Headwall und Purgatory sind wir gefahren), auf der Backside dann sind die Hänge weniger steil. Interessant, normalerweise ist das umgekehrt. Wir sind ziemlich begeistert und könnten hier noch gerne länger bleiben. Doch der Weg ruft!

... we have to go! We get away reasonably early (always add the usual delay to the as usual too optimistic planning) and reach the parking lot of the Montana Snowbowl, the home resort of Missoula. As we notice then with the march to the pay is that we are already on the overflow parking, it seems to have lots of people. Still, we hardly wait at the lifts, and that's a good thing. The resort actually has two faces: towards the front to the lodge it has some great descents (of whom Spartian Headwall and Purgatory we skied, but there are a lot more), on the backside then the slopes are less steep. Interesting, normally it's the other way around. We're pretty excited and could happily stay here longer. But the road is calling!

Lost Trail

Von der Snowbowl her kommend durchqueren wir Missoula, die mit knapp 80'000 Einwohnern (greater Area hat rund 120'000) zweitgrösste Stadt in Montana. Lost Trail Powder Mountain liegt am 2156m hohen Lost Trail Pass an der US93, die von Arizona bis Kanada führt. Kurz nach dem Bau des Highways 1926 wurde auch das Skigebiet gebaut. Viel mehr als eine schnelle Strasse zum Gebiet hat es hier nicht, Ortschaften sind sehr klein oder weiter weg. Dennoch ist der Parkplatz auch hier voll, dafür läuft der längste Lift Saddle Mountain nicht. Den Teil des Gebiets, den wir sehen, ist eher flach, North Face am Chair #1 ist das schwierigste, was wir fahren. Beim Saddle Mountain gäbe es noch das White House-Expert-Only-Terrain, aber eben, gäbe. Wir fahren dennoch bis zum Liftschluss bevor wir uns aufmachen und auf der Montana 43 durch das Big Hole Valley und die Weltstädte Wisdom (98 Einwohner), Wise Rive (266) bis in die Bergarbeiterstadt Butte (33'000).

Coming from the Snowbowl we cross Missoula, the second largest city in Montana with just about 80'000 inhabitants (greater area has about 120'000). Lost Trail Powder Mountain is located at the 2156m high Lost Trail Pass on US93, which leads from Arizona to Canada. Shortly after the highway was built in 1926, so was the ski resort. There is not much more than a fast road to the area, villages are very small or far away. Nevertheless, the parking lot is also full here, and the longest lift Saddle Mountain is not running. Still we find a parking spot and running lifts. The part of the area we ski is rather flat, North Face at Chair #1 is the hardest thing we ski. At Saddle Mountain there would be the White House-Expert-Only terrain, but just, as mentioned above. Still, we ski until the lift close before we hit the road and head up Montana 43 through the Big Hole Valley and the cosmopolitan towns of Wisdom (population 98), Wise Rive (266) to the mining town of Butte (33'000).

7 January 2022 Blacktail* and Whitefish

Wir verlassen Libby mit einem Andenken und machen uns nach einem lecker Mc-Breakfast - nicht dem letzten auf dieser Reise - auf den Weg nach Kalispell, einer dieser Boom-Regionen in Montana, denen man ein starke Bevölkerungswachstum vorhersagt. Auch heute sind die Strassen schneebedeckt, was uns am Morgen den Zeitplan verhagelt. Die Entscheidung deshalb: Zuerst Blacktail, dann Whitefish, weil dort Nachtski möglich ist.

We leave Libby with a souvenir and after a delicious Mc-Breakfast - not the last one on this trip - we make our way to Kalispell, one of those boom regions in Montana that are predicted to have a strong population growth. Today, too, the roads are snow-covered, which messes up our schedule in the morning. The decision therefore: First Blacktail, then Whitefish, because night skiing is possible there.

Blacktail

Der Einstieg in das 1998 gegründete und 2021 von Mission Ridge gekaufte Skigebiet Blacktail erfolgt von oben, wir fahren also den Berg hinauf um dann wieder abzufahren. Ob das nötig ist lasse ich mal dahin gestellt. Die drei Lifte erschliessen eher flaches Terrain am Olympic Tripple, Carving Pisten am Crystal Lift und ein bisschen Terrain am obersten Lift Thunderhead, von dem wir auch wieder zum Parkplatz kommen.

The entrance to the Blacktail ski resort, founded in 1998 and purchased by Mission Ridge in 2021, is from the top, so we drive up the mountain and then ski down again. Whether this is necessary or not I don't know. The three lifts open up rather flat terrain at the Olympic Tripple, carving slopes at the Crystal Lift and a bit of terrain at the top lift Thunderhead, from which we also come back to the parking lot.

Whitefish

Whitefish Resort oberhalb des gleichnamigen Städtchens macht einen ganz anderen Eindruck. Die Häuser im Resort lassen auf etwas Grösseres schliessen, doch das meiste ist leider geschlossen, und so kommen wir nur zum Nachtskikuss im Nassschneegestöber an den vorderen Liften. Nach ganz oben und zur Bowl nach hinten - sieht vielversprechend aus auf dem Pistenplan - schaffen wir leider nicht mehr. Vielleicht nächstes Mal, zusammen mit 49°? Der Weg nach Missoula ist dann schneefrei - aber immer noch 3 Stunden lang. Mal schauen, was das Wetter morgen bringt!

Whitefish Resort above the small town of the same name makes a completely different impression. The houses in the resort suggest something bigger, but most of the resort is unfortunately closed, and so we make it only for night skiing in the wet snow flurry at the front lifts. To the top and to the bowl in the back we have no access anymore - although it looks promising on the piste map. Maybe next time, together with 49°? The way to Missoula is then snow-free - but still 3 hours far. Let's see what the weather brings tomorrow!
